Jawa Dealer Adds Handling Charges Of Rs 9,000: Customer Complains To CEO
Some automobile dealers levy what they call a handling charge to their customers. These supposed handling charges have been made illegal by court orders in various states. According to Rushlane, the Supreme Court has said that handling charges cannot be levied, but that has not stopped dealers.
An authorized dealer for Jawa Motorcycles recently gave a customer a massive amount for a quotation for a Jawa Classic Dual ABS variant. The customer, obviously in shock and fairly angry, took to Twitter to share his experience and grievances. He tagged Classic Legends CEO Ashish Joshi in his post.
The initial quotation from the dealer stood at Rs 2,16,142. This included the ex-showroom price of Rs.1,76,242, lifetime tax and others at Rs 20,000, insurance at Rs 14,000, (PDI) Pre-Delivery Inspection at Rs 900, a center stand at Rs 800, handling and fitting charges at Rs 1,700 and Rs 500 respectively, and detailing at Rs.2,000. All these added up to a total of Rs 2,16,142.
The customer was shocked, felt cheated, and highlighted discrepancies in red to show unfair pricing in his opinion. He felt that these charges were uncalled for, and that they were added at the dealership level just to increase prices and make extra money on the side.
A call for action was immediate, and the buyer was soon on a conference call with the Regional General Manager of Jawa in South India, and the Managing Director of the dealership who removed the extra charges and brought the quote down to Rs 2,07,336. That is a reduction of almost Rs 9,000!
The Jawa Classic is powered by a 293cc liquid cooled engine that produces 27bhp of power and 28Nm of torque. The engine comes mated to a six-speed manual transmission. The brand brings back the classic retro styling of 20th Century motorcycles and the iconic motorcycle has a massive fan following in the country.
Thoughts About Dealers Swindling Customers
Some time ago, BMW Motorrad were in the news for the same thing. They charged about Rs 15,000 as a handling fee. Surprising the German headquarter refused to do anything about it. Dealers have always found ways to hide small amounts as handling charges. Most of us are so lost in the thought of owning a motorcycle or car that we pay no attention to what we're being charged for. At least Classic Legends is putting its foot down and standing up for customers. We hope they take heavy action against the dealer.
