Hero MotoCorp Discontinues Popular BS4 Models In India: New Team Formed To Oversee Transition To BS6
Hero MotoCorp has announced the end of production of over 50 variants of BS-IV models in the Indian market. These include most of the popular commuter-level motorcycles and scooters from the brand, such as the Hero Splendor, HF Deluxe, Glamour and the Pleasure scooter.
According to MoneyControl, dealerships have already been informed of the decision. With the production for the four products being stopped, sales of the models will last only till the availability of stocks at dealerships.
This is a very strong move from Hero MotoCorp, as these commuter-level motorcycles and scooters bring in the majority of sales for the company month-on-month. The Hero Splendor and HF Deluxe together account for almost over 4.5 lakh units of sales every month.
Apart from the discontinuation of the BS4 models, Hero MotoCorp has also set-up an interim council. This new council comprises of all the top leaders in the company, among other officials.
The new interim council will oversee that the company transitions smoothly to BS-VI products in the Indian market. The council will be operational from the 13th of December to look after the sales and after-sales during the transition period from BS4 to BS6.
Malo Le Masson, Head of Global Product Planning and Niranjan Gupta, Chief Financial Officer, Hero MotoCorp are also part of the interim council. The officials stated:
"The interim council, which comprises of Hero's leadership team and will be operational from December 13, and will play an important role to guide, support and handhold the sales and after-sales team to migrate the entire inventory to BS-VI well before the deadline of March 31, 2020."
The BS-VI emission norms in India will be implemented from the 1st of April 2020. All vehicles sold or registered after this date will have to comply with the new emission regulations. However, those registered on or before 31st March 2020 can be BS4-compliant and can be used even after the deadline.
The company is working on ramping up production of BS-VI variants of different models in India. The company recently launched the Hero Splendor i-Smart BS6 motorcycle in the Indian market. This is their first model to be compliant with the new stringent emission regulations.
The BS-VI compliant Hero Splendor i-Smart is offered with a starting price of Rs 57,400, ex-showroom (Delhi). It is powered by a 109.7cc single-cylinder air-cooled engine producing 9.3bhp and 9Nm of torque; coupled with a 4-speed gearbox.
Thoughts On The Hero MotoCorp BS4 Bike Discontinuation
The discontinuation of BS4 model production from Hero MotoCorp is a bold step from the brand in India. The commuter-level models whose production have been discontinued, bring in around 5 lakh volume sales every month.
However, with the BS-VI emission set to be implemented in the coming months, it will allow them to transition smoothly towards the new regulations.
