BMW Motorrad India has started accepting bookings for the new R 1250 GS adventure motorcycle. Expected to launch in India in January 2019 itself, the BMW R 1250 GS will be sold in two variants: standard and Adventure; just like the R 1200 GS which it replaces.

The new and advanced BMW R 1250 GS was first unveiled recently at EICMA Motorcycle Show 2018, held in Milan, Italy. Being the successor to the most popular and praised adventure motorcycle, the BMW R 1250 GS comes with a host of features and riding aids to have an edge over its competitors, while the basic design is quite similar to how it is right now — rugged and imposing.

The standard and Adventure versions have a few differences of their own as well. For instance, the R 1250 GS Adventure comes with more off-road-ready spoked wheels while the standard version features alloys. Furthermore, the BMW R 1250 GS Adventure gets a luggage rack, crash guards and knuckle guards. At a kerb weight of 249kg, the Adventure version is 20kg heavier. The fuel capacity is also higher (30 litres) compared to the standard variant (20 litres).

Other common equipment include riding modes (Road and Rain), dual-channel ABS, Automatic Stability Control (ASC), Hill Start Control, semi-active electronic suspension with 'automatic load compensation'. The optional Riding Mode Pro package adds Dynamic Traction Control (DTC), ABS Pro, Hill Start Control Pro and Dynamic Brake Assist to the list.

Both variants feature full-LED headlamps and tail lamps, plus a 6.5-inch TFT instrument console. In fact, the motorcycle has got almost everything to make it a capable off-roader.

The new BMW R 1250 GS is powered by a 1254cc twin-cylinder boxer engine which makes 136bhp and 143Nm of torque. In comparison, the R 1200 GS's 1170cc motor makes only 124bhp and 125Nm. The new engine is mated to a six-speed manual.

Another highlight of the R 1250 GS is its Variable Valve Timing system which BMW Motorrad calls as 'Shiftcam Technology'. The system helps the motorcycle take on almost any terrain, with proper throttle control and torque delivery at the low-end.

Even though bookings for the R 1250 GS were started at a dealership level, BMW Motorrad India has still not shared an official statement. The booking amount stands at Rs 5 lakh, while the ex-showroom (India) prices are expected to be around Rs 16 lakh and Rs 18 lakh for the standard and Adventure versions, respectively.

Thoughts On The BMW R 1250 GS

The Indian motorcycle market has always had a liking towards adventure motorcycles across a wide price range. The massive road presence for a motorcycle and the sheer capability to go anywhere on two wheels are some of the factors which make them desirable. The new BMW R 1250 GS will surely excel in this regard and claim its space in the market dominated by the likes of the Triumph Tiger 1200 and Ducati Multistrada 1260.
