Bike Sales Report India For April 2019: Two-Wheeler Sales Slide By 16.3 Per Cent

Two-wheeler sales in India dropped in the month of April 2019 by 16 per cent, compared to the same month last year. Major manufacturers like Hero Motocorp, Honda, Yamaha & Royal Enfield all recorded double digit dips in sales as the auto industry continues to slow down in India.

Hero MotoCorp

Hero MotoCorp, the world's largest two-wheeler manufacturer saw a drop in year-over-year sales of 16.2 per cent compared to the month of April 2018. Hero MotoCorp sold 5,67,932 two-wheelers in the month of April 2019 which was a loss of 109,860 units year-over-year. Hero had sold a total of 6,77,792 units in the month of April 2018.

However, despite the double-digit dip in sales wasn't enough to remove Hero's stranglehold over the two-wheeler market in India, with the two-wheeler giant actually gaining 0.05 per cent in market share (now at 34.66 per cent).

Hero recently released three new motorcycles and two scooters this month, which should hopefully see the two-wheeler giant get back into the black soon.

Honda

Japanese two-wheeler giant Honda held onto the second spot in the sales charts. Honda sold a total of 4,32,767 units in the month of April 2019, which was a loss of 31.9 per cent year-over-year compared to the same month last year. In the fourth month of 2018 , Honda sold a total of 6,35,824 two-wheelers which was a loss of 2,03,057 units. Honda also lost 6.05 per cent of its market share in thw two wheeler market which dropped to 26.41 per cent.

TVS Motor Company

Indian two-wheeler manufacturer TVS posted a year-over-year growth of 2.8 percent for April selling a total of 2,48,456 units in the fourth month of 2019. Compared to April 2018, when the company sold 2,41,604 two-wheelers, TVS sold an extra 6,852 units last month, which in turn saw its market share increase by 2.83 per cent to 15.16%. TVS is currently readying an update to the Apache RR 310, which is expected to arrive by the end of the next month.

Bajaj Auto

Bajaj continued its upward trend in the sales charts with a year-over-year growth of 2.6 per cent. Bajaj sold a total of 2,05,875 motorcycles in the fourth month of 2019, a gain of 5,133 units compared to April 2018, where it sold a total of 2,00,742 two-wheelers. The rise in sales also coincided with a year-over-year gain in market share of 2.31 per cent to 12.57 per cent.

Yamaha

Japanese two-wheeler manufacturer Yamaha took the fifth spot in April 2019 despite a drop in sales numbers of 10.2 per cent to 60,781 units. This was a loss of 6,907 units compared to April 2018, when Yamaha sold 67,688 two-wheelers in India. However, Yamaha's share of the two-wheeler market rose by 0.25 per cent to 3.71 per cent.

Royal Enfield

The sales reports haven't been a happy place for Royal Enfield lately as the Chennai-based two-wheeler manufacturer posted a year-over-year drop in sales of 20.8 per cent. Royal Enfield sold a total of 59,137 motorcycles in April 2019, a loss in sales of 16,490 units compared to the same month in 2018, where the two-wheeler manufacturer shipped out a total of 74,627 units.
