Bajaj Avenger 160 To Be Launched In India As Replacement For Avenger 180
Bajaj Auto will soon be launching the Avenger 160 in the Indian market. The Bajaj Avenger 160 is a result of tighter emissions regulations and the BS-VI emissions norms that are set to be put in place next year.
Media reports suggest that the Avenger 160 is a replacement for the current-gen Avenger 180. The Bajaj Avenger has to an extent been one of the most successful cruisers in the Indian market with due credit to its affordable price tag.
It is currently available in two engine options - 180cc and 220cc. However, in light of the BS-VI emissions norms coming into play in 2020, Bajaj Auto is scrambling to make all its motorcycles compliant.
This is where there is a slight problem with the Avenger 180 and 220, as these engines are pretty old-school, carburetor-fueled and only have two valves. This setup makes conversion to BS-VI quite a task. The ideal configuration for BS-VI is a combination of fuel-injection and a four-valve engine head. This is what Bajaj aims to do with the Avenger 160.
The motorcycle will be powered by the engine from the Bajaj Pulsar NS160. The current-gen Bajaj Pulsar NS160 is powered by an air-cooled, single-cylinder, 160.3cc, twin-spark DTS-i engine with a maximum power output of 15.28bhp and a peak torque output of 14.6Nm, which makes it the most powerful bike in its segment.
The current-gen Bajaj Avenger 180 on the other hand is powered by an air-cooled, single-cylinder, 180cc engine with a maximum power output of 15.38bhp and a peak torque output of 13.7Nm. Therefore, even if there is a drop in engine capacity, the performance would remain the same while emitting less pollution and being more fuel efficient.
We can expect Bajaj to give the motorcycle a different state of tune that is more suitable for a cruiser motorcycle while gearbox duties will be handled by the same 5-speed gearbox in the current-gen Pulsar NS160. Brakes and suspension will remain the same as the current-gen Bajaj Avenger.
Thoughts On Bajaj Avenger 160 To Be Launched In India
The Bajaj Avenger 180 was due for a facelift as it was pretty old anyway. However, Bajaj has decided to downsize the engine and this might just bring down the price as well. As for the 220cc variant, there have been reports and rumours of Bajaj developing a 250cc cruiser. The new model will be developed to be compliant with BS-VI from the very start.
