Aprilia SR 150 Completes 10,000-Kilometre Roadtrip From Chennai To Ladakh And Back
A 24-year-old engineer form Chennai is gaining widespread recognition for completing a 10,000-kilometre roadtrip on his Aprilia SR 150. He has become the first person to complete such a long roadtrip on an Aprilia scooter in India. The roadtrip is being lauded by the brand as it has proven the reliability and durability of the SR 150.
Ever since the first roadtrip on a motorcycle in 1915, these two-wheeled tours have been known by many to give a certain sense of freedom. However, many stay away from these roadtrips due to various reasons. For some, the fear of exploring becomes an obstacle while for others, the lack of a proper touring motorcycle kills the idea of a roadtrip.
A few people though, have defied the odds and proved that one can use any motorcycle or in this case scooter for an epic roadtrip. Nagarajan Adithya, a Chennai-based engineer and IIT Madras research associate based his roadtrip on the latter principle and took off on a roadtrip of a lifetime.
He had bought the Aprilia SR 150 in February 2018 and by the looks of it did not ride it a lot. In a span of 16 months, he clocked just 8,000 kilometres on the odometer of his SR 150, which corresponds to an average of 500 kilometres a month. Things changed drastically in June 2019 when he set off on a roadtrip to Ladakh.
Within 40 days, he clocked more than 10,000 kilometres, which is significantly higher than the total number of kilometres he had ridden in 16 months. Nagarajan Adithya set off from Chennai on 04 June, 2019 on his Aprilia SR 150.
He then rode through Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Rajasthan, Delhi, Haryana, Punjab & Jammu and Kashmir to reach Ladakh. On the return journey, he rode through Himachal Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Andhra, Telangana and Tamil Nadu to reach Chennai on 13 July, 2019.
Nagarajan Adithya said, "I wanted to experiment and see how my Aprilia SR 150 would fare on a pan-India road trip. Many well-wishers were concerned about my trip, but the trip was planned to the last detail and Aprilia SR 150 proved to be a strong and faithful riding companion."
"In the 40 days, I had to service my bike only twice and I faced no puncture or any untoward incident. The Aprilia SR 150 is a powerful and aesthetically appealing bike and in the small town of Zangla, Kargil the locals were impressed to see a 150-cc scooter making through undefined paths (no metaled roads); they had never seen an Aprilia SR 150 before!"
The Aprilia SR 150 is powered by an air-cooled, 154.8cc, single-cylinder engine with a maximum power output of 10.4bhp and a peak torque output of 11.4Nm. A variomatic gearbox does transmission duties.
It is currently the most powerful mass-produced scooter in India, but it certainly must have felt out of place up in the high mountains. Going by Nagarajan's experience though, the scooter appears to have performed flawlessly. According to him, the scooter needed to be serviced twice in 40 days and performed effortlessly otherwise.
Thoughts On Aprilia SR 150 Undertaking A 10,000-Kilometre Roadtrip To Ladakh
The very first roadtrips were not ones that were conducted using a sophisticated touring motorcycle. The adventurers took whatever motorcycle was at their disposal and made the most use of it. Kudos to Nagarajan for doing the same.
