Aprilia Plans To Add Bluetooth Connectivity To Its Scooter Fleet

According to BikeWale, the next generation Aprilia SR range of scooters will feature Bluetooth connectivity in addition to BS-VI complaint engines. The Aprilia SR150, SR125, and the SR125 Storm will come loaded with a Bluetooth enabled speedometer console.

The SR range of scooters are expected to be upgraded with these features during the first quarter of 2020. The scooters are also set to get other upgrades including LED headlamps, LED tail lamps, and revised graphics. All these upgrades would obviously mean an increase in the pricing.

Piaggio is reportedly working towards introducing the BS-VI compliant models for all the Vespa and Aprilia range of scooters, and they want to launch by the end of January 2020. The BS-VI compliant scooters will also feature fuel injection systems and an ECU.

Aprilia Plans To Add Bluetooth Connectivity To Its Scoo

The TVS NTorq 125 is the only scooter that offers Bluetooth connectivity in the country. It uses a smartphone app to offer functions like caller ID and navigation, among other features. Aprilia is also expected to develop a smartphone app that will be paired with the SR150, SR125 and the SR125 Storm through their Bluetooth speedometer console to offer the various connectivity features.

Other news is that the Italian manufacturer is also working towards a scooter with a higher displacement engine, supposedly between the 150cc and 200cc mark. Piaggio will also use the newly developed engine in the sub-200cc segment on Vespa and Aprilia scooters. The new engine is being designed for the Indian market, and is being designed at the company's research and development facility at Italy.

Diego Graffi, Managing Director and CEO, Piaggio Vehicles, said during an interview last month, "It is going to be a big jump from what we currently see in the Indian market and will also preview what could come in the market afterwards. Even though that kind of displacement for scooter application may still be too early, but something between 150-200cc is very much possible to happen, not just from us but even from the competition."

The Aprilia sub-200cc scooter is expected to arrive during the second half of 2020, and the Vespa during 2021.

Thoughts About The Bluetooth Upgrades For The Aprilia Scooters

Connectivity seems to be the next big thing. While we are impressed that manufactureres are making an effort to help the human population stay connected, we're a little unsure about what they're connecting to. We feel bad that the days when a scooter was just a scooter and a motorcycle was just a motorcycle are slowly dying. Connective tech seems to be taking the pleasure out of being on a two-wheeler.

We think we want bicycles now. But again, the bicycle industry will offer a host of "connected" features in the near future. About now, nothing sounds better than the word 'rickshaw'.
