Lambretta Scooter India-Launch Details Out — To Be Fully Electric, Yet Classy
Iconic Lambretta scooters will re-launch in India with a fully-electric model. In fact, the first Lambretta for India will debut as a prototype at Auto Expo 2020 (February); as a rival to the upcoming Piaggio Vespa Elettrica. At this point, we are not sure if the upcoming India-spec Lambretta scooters will be available only in an electric format, but also a petrol avatar.
All the images used are for representational purposes only.
Autocar India shares that Lambretta is yet to reveal the full specifications of the electric powertrain, even though they say "it closely cooperates with a reputed global partner". For our market, ‘Lambretta India' will be associated with Lohia Auto and New Delhi-based Bird Group.
Reports also suggest that India will receive a steel-bodied Super Lambretta as an 'aspirational model'. It will be bigger and more spacious than other models, while retaining all the elegant aesthetic highlights. The Super Lambretta is meant for "ambitious young individuals with a good taste in Italian design".
Lambrett scooter's parent company, Innocenti, is planning to set up an assembly plant in Mumbai. Aimed to make ‘original Lambretta products', the same facility will supply products to surrounding global markets, as well.
Lambretta scooters were previously sold in India under Scooter India Limited (SIL); a government undertaking since 1972. SIL started the production of Lambretta scooters (or Vijay Super, as Indians know it by) and Lambro three wheelers (sold under the name, Vikram), back in 1975.
It was in 1997 when SIL ended the production of Lambretta scooters in India, and concentrated on three-wheelers. Now, the iconic scooters are making a comeback after a gap of more than 20 years.
In the coming months, there will be a clearer picture of what can be expected in the new Lambretta products for the Indian market. The price for the above-mentioned Lambretta electric scooter should be around Rs 1.25 lakh ex-showroom.
Thoughts On The Lambretta Re-Launch In India
India is one of the best markets in the world for scooters and lately, there is a growing demand in the country for premium scooters. As of now, Piaggio's Vespa and Aprilia models are the best choices in the segment, and once Lambretta makes a comeback to India, the two will have a tough time. What do you think?
