Bangalore Cops Ban Globally Approved DOT, Snell & ECE Helmets; Insists on ISI-Certified Helmets
Bangalore: ISI-marked helmets will only be accepted, from February 1, 2018. Non ISI & imported helmets such as DOT and ECE will not be allowed.
The Bangalore and Mysore Police department have lately been reprimanding two-wheeler riders for wearing a non-ISI helmet while commuting in the city. Imported helmets such as DOT, ECE, SNELL were banned while riding in Bangalore and Mysore. Some of the locally manufactured and non-ISI certified helmets were confiscated and were even destroyed. Recently, two-wheeler riders have taken to social media to vent thier anger about the ban on non-ISI helmets Bangalore rule.
|
The Bangalore Traffic Police (BTP) took to social media and via Twitter and they advised riders to wear helmets with ISI approval to maintain road safety. In response, many Twitter users wanted more clarity if imported helmets certified under ECE, DOT or SNELL were under the helmet ban as well, for which the cops had confirmed that DOT or ECE or SNELL helmets could be used.

However, BTP made a complete U-Turn on their approval to use imported helmets. Additional Commissioner Of Police (Traffic) has revealed to Times Of India that only ISI helmets are allowed. From February 1, 2018, BTP will start checking two-wheeler users and will be fined or helmets confiscated if they are found riding without an ISI certified helmet.
|
He said, "We will not accept such helmets. We will only accept those with an ISI mark." And when asked about the update on the Twitter handle of BTP confirming that imported helmet can be used, he said, "Somebody operating the Twitter handle has erred. I'll order the post to be removed."
Tests by international agencies have proved that DOT, ECE or SNELL certified helmets pass stringent safety ratings before they are sold to the public. There have been many instances of ISI certified helmets cracking upon impact while the imported helmets have shown far more resistance to crashes.

After TOI published the news on January 23, 2018, there have been several outcries on social media platforms over the ban on imported helmets. Now, R Hitendra ACP (Traffic) has tweeted that "BTP will write to the transport department seeking clarification about the non-ISI helmets in view of the claims from the buyers of imported helmets are better than ISI. Till they reply BTP will not take any action on them."
The Bengaluru City Police too took to Twitter and posted the same message that riders will not face any consequences if found wearing a non-ISI helmets in Bangalore.
Thoughts About ISI Helmets Bangalore Rule!
The most important aspect while riding a two-wheeler is to wear certified safety gears such as helmets. While there are enough discussions about the quality of ISI helmets, imported helmets certified by DOT or ECE or SNELL follow the most stringent method to test the helmets for its quality and strength.
BTP should have an in-depth study of imported helmets and if they comply with the stringent rules and regulations to withstand severe impacts and avoid any injuries or even death. Stay tuned to DriveSpark as we bring you the update on the non-ISI helmet rule in Bangalore. Until then ride safely.
