16th International Jawa Day Celebrations Bangalore 2018 — A Look Back To Yesterday’s Motorcycles

Bangalore Jawa Yezdi Motorcycle Club (BJYMC) hosted the 16th International Jawa Day celebrations on 8th July 2018. Held at St Joseph's College ground, the event witnessed the participation of almost 500 motorcycles, including some rare and well-maintained examples.

Almost all the Jawa models which have rolled out from the former factory in Mysore were on display. The absence of guards and fences further helped visitors have a closer look at each motorcycle. Young to old, the owners were more than happy to share the stories of their priceless collection.

The number of motorcycles which turned up was so high that only hardcore Jawa or Yezdi fans could name them all.

The event was filled with the typical sound and smoke of two-stroke motorcycles. Hearing the commotion inside, a lot of enthusiasts and passersby got in to check out the same.

There was also a dedicated section for historically-relevant Jawa models. Old track bikes were showcased along with the trophies they've won back in the days.

Making things more interesting were some motorcycles with sidecars. An ideal choice for families, sidecars were a common thing associated with vintage motorcycles. The military also used to employ motorcycles with sidecars, either to carry an extra soldier or ammunition.

As mentioned earlier, there was a variety of motorcycles on showcase. Some of them were as good as new; the result of years of careful maintenance. Most of the participants were also accompanied by the mechanics who worked on their motorcycles.

It is not an easy task to bring such classic motorcycles to immaculate conditions. For example, the Jawa you see here is a result of over seven years of looking after. Many parts had to be imported from around the world.

In addition to Jawa and Yezdi motorcycles, there were some iconic Indian classics too, including the Yamaha RD350. No classic motorcycle meet seems to be complete without the participation of the RD350. Why? The answer lies – here!

There was also a parallel-twin Royal Enfield which gained a lot of attention – the Constellation. The motorcycle sounded incredible and was beyond pristine. Upon first glance, one can be sure that its owner has given utmost importance to detail. The Royal Enfield Constellation is powered by a 700cc engine that made around 52bhp when new; an impressive figure for its time.

Jawa motorcycles were introduced in the country by Ideal Jawa Ltd. in 1960. The Mysore-based company sold motorcycles under the ‘Jawa' name till 1972. The bikes were later marketed as ‘Yezdi'. The motorcycles have got a cult following all over the world, especially in India.

  • Yezdi 350 Twin
  • The company was shut down in 1996 mainly due to the strict emission norms which burdened two-strokes. In addition to this, many other brands introduced four-stroke motorcycles which proved to be more reliable and fuel-efficient than two-strokes. But Jawa motorcycles might make a comeback soon.

    Jawa and Yezdi motorcycles have played an important in India's biking scene. Since Jawa motorcycles were stopped from production long back, many are not even aware of such a brand today.
