BMW Motorrad Unveils The Ghost Rider — A Self-Riding R 1200 GS
German motorcycle maker BMW Motorrad has unveiled a self-driving or self-riding bike called as the Ghost Rider. Ghost Rider is a BMW R 1200 GS which is capable of riding on its own without the need of any assistance or a rider. The motorcycle is capable of riding on its own and navigate the corners with precision.
BMW Motorrad gave a live demo of the self-driving R 1200 GS on a test track. The autonomous BMW R 1200 GS is controlled by a computer and does not require any aids or assistance. The self-driving BMW R 1200 GS can easily navigate through corners and can even come to a halt without crashing on its side.
BMW states that the focus of the technology is not to achieve a fully autonomous motorcycle. But the technology is an extension and refinement of the rider assistance system. Less experienced riders can be assisted by the electronics to avoid dangerous situations faced by the rider.
The autonomous technology is implemented on the R 1200 GS adventure bike which is fully-loaded with panniers. The interesting thing is the motorcycle comes to a stop without any hiccups. Apart from the autonomous technology, all the mechanical components of the bike remain unchanged.
The BMW R 1200 GS draws power from a 1,170c liquid-cooled, flat twin engine that produces 123bhp and 125Nm of torque. The engine is mated to a 6-speed gearbox. The bike is capable of reaching a top speed of over 200km/h. But we are not sure at what speeds the self-driving technology works.
BMW Motorrad is not the first firm to work on an autonomous two-wheeler. Yamaha has already showcased a motorcycle riding robot called as MotoBot. Honda has also showcased a bike which is capable of following its owner. But BMW Motorrad has gone ahead and showcases a fully autonomous bike.
Thoughts On The Self-Driving BMW R 1200 GS
