Piaggio India Sales Grows Significantly — The Era Of Premium Scooters
Piaggio which sells Vespa and Aprilia scooters in India witnessed sales growth of 90.97 percent during the April-June 2017 period.
Piaggio Vehicles Pvt. Ltd. which sells Vespa and Aprilia scooters in India has seen a significant sales growth during the first quarter (April-June) of 2017.
The Italian scooter manufacturer posted a massive 90.97 percent sales growth for the said period. As per Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM), the company sold 13,572 scooters during the April-June 2017 period.
In fact, Piaggio sold 4,515 scooters in June 2017, registering a 94 percent sales growth compared to the same period last year. The significant increase in sales is attributed to customer's interest of the Aprilia SR 150 and Vespa 150 scooters.
While the Indian customers continue to opt for the 100-110cc scooters such as the Honda Activa and TVS Jupiter, premium scooters seem to have increased the curiosity of the Indian consumers.
That said, Honda Motorcycle and Scooters India Ltd. sold over 9.73 lakh scooters in the 100-125cc segment during the April-June 2017 period. Piaggio sold 5,279 scooters in the 125cc segment which accounted for nearly 39 percent of its overall sales.
However, Piaggio sold 8,293 units of the 150cc models in the same period, registering 61 percent sales growth. This indicates that there is a growing market for premium scooters, and Piaggio is the only scooter manufacturer who is offering 150cc powered scooters.
DriveSpark Thinks!
The era of premium scooter has probably begun in India, and Indian buyers are moving away from the regular 100-125cc scooters to premium scooters such as the Aprilia SR 150 and the Vespa 150 despite being priced higher.
