Former Tata Sons chairman Cyrus Mistry died in a car accident on Sunday. Cyrus Mistry was on the back seat of a Mercedes Benz GLC SUV and the accident is said to have taken place around 2.30 pm.
According to the sources, Cyrus Mistry was travelling from Udawada (Gujarat) to Mumbai along with Jehangir Pandole, Anahita Pandole, and Darius Pandole. Moreover, the car was driven by Anahita Pandole, a Mumbai-based gynaecologist, and the accident happened just 110km away from Mumbai.
It was later revealed that Jehangir Pandole, who also died in the accident was sitting next to Cyrus Mistry. Whereas, Darius Pandole and Anahita Pandole survived the accident with injuries and were sitting on the front seats.
While some people have already started to question the safety ratings of cars, it is worth mentioning that the side airbags of the car (Mercedes-Benz GLC) involved in the accident did not open. However, this is not the reason for the death of Cyrus Mistry and Jehangir Pandole.
According to the initial reports, the Mercedes Benz GLC SUV driven by Anahita Pandole was speeding and the accident happened while she was trying to overtake another vehicle from the wrong side and hit the divider on a bridge over the Surya river at Charoti Naka.
Now, as per the latest reports, Police are now analysing the footage captured by CCTV cameras in the nearby spots and they are also investigating whether the car had any mechanical failure that resulted in the accident.
Apart from that, Police are also trying to retrieve data from a chip assembled in the Mercedes Benz GLC SUV - Which is similar to that of a Black Box in an aeroplane. Also, a forensic team has also collected samples from the accident spot.
Coming back to the accident, from the images of the accident, one can see that the front airbags of the Mercedes Benz GLC SUV have been deployed, whereas the side airbags have not. However, these airbags would not have been of much help in a frontal collision as the side airbags have been designed to protect occupants from side impact or rollovers.
Now, given the fact that Mercedes-Benz GLC is one of the safest SUVs in India with a 5-Star safety rating from Euro-NCAP, many would question the 5-Star safety rating after such a high-profile accident.
However, in reality, this accident could have been survived by both Cyrus Mistry and Jehangir Pandole, if they would have worn seatbelts. This would have prevented both passengers from fatal injuries sustained in the accident as seatbelts would have held them firmly at the time of the accident.
Thoughts About The Cyrus Mistry Accident
The high-profile accident involving the death of Cyrus Mistry and Jehangir Pandole is a reminder to everyone about the importance of seatbelts.
