At an event organised by Shell in Bangalore, 17 student teams from India, from 15 different universities & institutes across India were given a send-off to compete in the fifth annual Shell Eco Marathon Asia competition.
The 2014 Shell Eco Marathon Asia competition will be held on Feb 2014 in Philippines. Unlike previous years when it was held at the Sepang International Circuit in Kuala Lumpur, the 2014 edition of the mileage competition will take place in Luneta Park in Manila.
Shell Eco Marathon is an annual event that's held in Europe, Americas and Asia. The goal of the competition is to get student teams from different countries and different educational institutes to build fuel efficient vehicles.
The winning team is the one that builds a vehicle that can travel the farthest distance using the least amount of energy. To be more specific, their performances are measured based the distance covered using 1 kWh of power or 1 liter of fuel.
Vehicles can be entered under two categories - Prototypes and Urban Concept and participating teams can make use of any of the following fuel types: petrol, diesel, ethanol, FAME & Gas to Liquid (GTL). Alternate fuels, which includes electricity, hydrogen and battery electric, with potential support of solar power.
Over 140 student teams from across Asia and the Middle East will be participating, with the Indian contingent being the second largest. The complete list of participating Indian teams can be found below.
Speaking at the symbolic national send-off of participants, Dr. Yasmine Hilton, Chairman Shell Companies in India said, " Shell is committed to helping the world meet its growing energy needs in a responsible way.
