'Odd Rod' Mazda Miata MX-5 Is The Frankenstein Monster You'll Love
The Mazda MX-5 (Miata) is one of the best known driver's cars and is also a darling of the car modification world. The Odd Rod is probably the most bonkers example of a modified Mazda MX-5 that we've ever seen.
The Mazda MX-5 (Miata) is one of the best known driver's cars and is also a darling of the car modification world. The 'Odd Rod' Miata seen here is probably the most bonkers example of a modified Mazda MX-5 that we've ever seen.
The Odd Rod Mazda MX-5 is the work of car afficionado Tommy Reichelderfer from Atlanta, Georgia in the United States. Reichelderfer is a machinisit by trade and his love for crafting machines is what drove him to create this mechanical Frankenstein's monster of a MX-5.
Reichelderfer took his first-gen Miata and ripped up everything and set about crafting a machine that would make the best hot rodders out there green with envy. The changes are very visible and the biggest one can be found under where the bonnet should have been.
Behind the massive gold grille and yellow pod style headlights is not the regular MX-5 engine. Reichelderfer swapped out the Mazda's tiny inline four engine with a Ford V8. The 302 cubic-inch (4.94 litres) V8 has been stroked out to 331 cubic inches (5.42-litres).
The carburetted engine pushes out 470 horsepower and 624Nm of peak torque at the crank. The engine vents out its anger at the world through a set of side exit exhausts.
The Odd Rod Mazda MX-5 is constantly evolving as Reichelderfer continues to tinker around with his bonkers lightweight monster. The most visually aggressive sections of the Odd Rod are the wing elements at the front and the rear.
This front wing element is a chunky unit that looks like it would cut the legs of any pedestrian unlucky enough to meet this little monster at full chat. The rear wing is another massive element of this mad Miata and is quite strong considering Reichelderfer has been photographed sitting on it.
Thoughts On the 'Odd Rod' Mazda MX-5
The Odd Rod Mazda MX-5 shows just how crazy cars can get when all the rules are thrown out. The Odd Rod with its Ford V8 doesn't have the typical MX-5 soundtrack but considering everything else that has been changed on this lightweight monster we can't really say its a typical Miata. An Odd Rod indeed.
