Narendra Modi Does Not Use A ‘Made In India Car’ — Why?

To start with, the Mahindra Scorpio was not recognized as a safe vehicle by the Special Protection Group (SPG) after modifications. Also, the Scorpio has a tall stance, making it easy for snipers to attack the Prime Minister.

Also, compared to the Scorpio, the BMW 7 Series has better weight distribution and the centre of gravity is better, making the BMW a better handling car at high speeds, and at times of emergency.

Perception of threat is much greater to ‘Prime Minister' Modi when compared to ‘Chief Minister' Modi. So the SPG chose the BMW 7 Series that has proved to be very reliable globally, compared to the Mahindra Scorpio.

Finally, coming to think of it, the armoured BMW 7 Series was already in service from the time Atal Bihari Vajpayee was the Prime Minister of India. Other cars were considered too, apart from the Scorpio and the 7 Series, but the government did not want to spend unnecessarily.

When it comes to Make In India, there are a few limitations unfortunately, like some of the technology that goes into making cars, and bulletproof cars that pass VR7 certification. The car can protect the Prime Minister, or its occupants from mines, and the car comes with a explosion proof fuel chamber.

Coming to the engine aspect of the car, the armoured BMW 7 Series used by the Prime Minister of India is powered by a 6.0-litre V12 engine that produces 544bhp and 750 Nm of torque. The engine is enough to propel the car to a top speed of 210km/h.
