Low-Cost AC Charging Port For Electric Vehicles To Be Installed Across India: Here Are All Details

Indian Government is all set to roll out the low-cost charging points for electric vehicles in the country. Called the Low-Cost AC Chargepoint (LAC), has been developed by the combined efforts of various auto and electronic component suppliers in the country.

According to the government, the Low-Cost AC Chargepoint will cost around Rs 3500 and will be operated with a smartphone. The AC charger point allows up to 3 kW of power to be drawn charging electric scooters and autorickshaws.

The government is ready to rope in Indian manufacturers to start the manufacture of the LAC as per Indian standards. The charge points will be formally issued by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS).

The LAC is aimed at high scalability, portability and compatibility with any 220V 15A single-phase line. These charge points will be placed in various common areas across the city. This includes parking lots, metro and railway stations, shopping malls, hospitals, office complexes, apartments and even Kirana and other shops.

These low-cost charge points will help solve the major range anxiety issues in the ownership of electric vehicles in the country. With easily accessible charge points, the government aims for faster adoption of electric vehicles in the country.

The formal release of the standards for the LAC will be issued in the next two months, after completion of field and durability trials of sample products. The government is also hoping that a new industry sector will emerge catering to the high volume, low-cost charging infrastructure for EVs in the country, which creates job opportunities.

Currently, over 84 per cent of total vehicles in the two-wheelers & three-wheelers segment belong to Internal Combustion Engine (ICE). The Government of India is looking to decrease the percentage of ICE vehicles by providing various solutions for faster EV adoption in the country.

The government states that "Cities, towns and villages in India will soon be able to benefit from an innovative low-cost Electric Vehicle (EV) charge point that can accelerate the adoption of Electric 2-wheelers and 3-wheelers. A forthcoming Indian Standard will allow a rapid scaling up of EV charging infrastructure that is much needed in the country."

Dr V. Sumantran, Chairman, DST-PSAO Group, said "When industry and government entities come together to work on national goals, remarkable progress can be achieved with speed. Furthermore, this effort brought out the talent in India for intelligent cost-innovation. Affordability constraints in India demand that we address problems keeping in mind both cost and scalability."

Dr Rajiv Kumar, Vice Chairman, NITI Aayog, said, "The emphasis on charging points rather than costly charging stations has led to the accelerated efforts by the team for developing the LAC Charging standard for the light electric vehicles segment, as the next logical step."

Thoughts About The Low-Cost AC Charging Port For Electric Vehicles To Be Installed Across India

The Indian Government is looking to take a different approach to solve the lack of electric vehicle charging infrastructure in the country. Rather than installing expensive DC fast-charging stations, the Indian Government is looking to add low-cost AC fast-charging stations on a massive scale.
