India is making headlines globally because of the decision taken by the Government in the state of Maharashtra to revolutionise the transportation sector. The Framework agreement was signed between Virgin Hyperloop One and the Maharashtra government on Sunday to implement the revolutionary Hyperloop between Pune and Mumbai and the revolution will begin with Construction of a demonstration track.
Hyperloop One is expected to be operational in the Mumbai-Pune sector by 2024 and the 150-kilometre distance between Mumbai, the financial capital of India and Pune, one of the leading Manufacturing and IT hubs in the country is expected to be covered by Hyperloop One travel in less than 25-minutes.
Elon Musk, the co-founder, CEO and product architect of Tesla and founder, CEO and lead designer of SpaceX had first mentioned the Hyperloop concept in 2012. The Hyperloop concept made use of several sealed tubes through which a large pod can travel without any air-resistance or friction, making extremely high speeds possible.
Virgin Hyperloop One is an American company led by business tycoon Richard Branson that is working on commercialising the Hyperloop concept and implementing it to move passengers and/or cargo in half the time taken by air travel.
With the framework agreement signed for Maharashtra, Hyperloop One will be launched in India first, even before the UAE, Northern Europe and USA where the Hyperloop has been confirmed to arrive soon.
Sir Richard Branson, the founder of Virgin Group and Chairman of Hyperloop One announced the agreement with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Of Maharashtra Devendra Fadnavis at the Magnetic Maharashtra event held in Mumbai.
Richard Branson revealed that he considered India to be a gigantic opportunity and also that there are plans to make India one of the export hubs for Hyperloop tubes.
The Mumbai-Pune route is one of the busiest in the world, with millions commuting between the two cities, making it perfect for Hyperloop One to be implemented on that route first. According to the preliminary report by Virgin, the company claims Hyperloop One will be able to move 10,000 passengers in an hour, two ways. Upto 15 crore people can be transported on the sector once it is fully operational.
Sir Branson also announced that the test run on this route would be completed within three-years and the route will be commercially opened three-years after that. He also announced that several Indian companies are being considered for a partnership in implementation.
Hyperloop One had also uploaded a video which showed tests, and also shows that the company is considering India as one of their most important markets. Hyperloop One will initially travel at a speed of 350km/h and as infrastructure improves, speeds of up to 1,000 km/h can be achieved.
