The CT-1 Microcar Is A Real Life Transformer That May Just Change The Way We Drive
Israeli startup City Transformer showed off its CT-1 electric microcar in Paris last month. While it may look like every other microcar, the City Transformer CT-1's party trick can transform the way you drive in a city.
So what exactly is this party trick that has us gushing like a sugar high kid in a sweet shop? Well, it all has to do with the City Transformer CT-1's foldable chassis and active width adjustment system that allows the CT-1 to switch between 1 metre (City Mode) and 1.4 metres (Performance Mode) in just a few moments of time.
In City Mode, the City Transformer CT-1 is not much wider than a motorcycle allowing its driver to outsmart and escape the traffic jams you see in most cities and towns across the world. In City Mode, City Transformer claims that 4 CT-1's can park in a place reserved for 1 large car.
In City Mode, the CT-1 microcar can also sneak into smaller 1-metre-wide parking sports that are usually of use when on a bike. In city mode, the top speed is limited to just 45km/h.
In Performance Mode, the CT-1 offers the safety and convenience of a regular car by stretching out to 1.4 meters (with the wing mirrors extended out). In Performance Mode, the all-electric City Transformer sprints from 0-50km/h in just 5 seconds and hit a top speed of 90km/h which should help it hit the highways with ease.
This is achieved thanks to a set of motors that are mounted to the rear wheels which each produce 7.5kWh (10.05bhp). The motors draw power from a lithium-ion battery pack (the size of which has not been revealed yet) that allows for a range of up to 180 kilometres on a single charge.
The City Transformer CT-1 is not a big car by any means. The transforming supercar measures 2,500mm long, 1,580mm tall and has a 1,800mm long wheelbase. The insides of the car are tiny with just two seats on offer (one behind the other) which should make for a rather snug cabin.
The City Transformer CT-1 is set to go into production in 2024 and will cost €16,000 (Rs 13.89 lakh) before any taxes are applied.

The City Transformer CT-1 and its real-life transforming ability means that it is at ease in both the crowded city streets and when the roads open up. If this is what cars in the future can do, we may just be in for a treat.
