BESCOM Sets Up The First Public Electric Vehicle Charging Station In Bangalore

The Bangalore Electricity Supply Company (BESCOM) has taken up an eco-friendly initiative and has set up the first public electric vehicle charging station in Bangalore. Located at its K.R Circle office, the charging station can be accessed by citizens at a nominal fee.
Electric vehicles are the future and there is no hiding from this fact. Government and government-run agencies and companies too have realised this and the latest to join the list is Bangalore Electricity Supply Company Limited (BESCOM).
BESCOM is one of the four electricity supply companies in the state of Karnataka, and is responsible for supply for electricity in eight districts, covering 41,092 square kilometres and a population of over 207 lakh people.
An organisation of this magnitude, setting up a public electric vehicle charging station speaks volumes about the future of automobiles in India. Bangalore city alone has a registration of around 6,000 electric vehicles and this is only set to increase in the coming days with more and more manufacturers entering the electric vehicle segment.
As an inaugural offer, BESCOM will charge Rs 4 per unit of electricity used to charge electric vehicles at the station. This inaugural offer will last until BESCOM gets approval for its proposed rates from the Karnataka Electricity Regulatory Commission (KERC).
BESCOM has proposed a rate of Rs 4.85 per unit of power between 6:00 a.m and 10 p.m whereas rates will be dropped to Rs 3.85 per unit between 10 p.m and 6 a.m. Fast charging will cost Rs 5 per unit at day and Rs 4.40 at night. Approximately 16 units of electricity are required to charge an electric car, which leads to low running costs.
BESCOM will not stop at one charging station, but has identified 200 locations including metro stations where EV charging stations could be placed and feasibility studies for nearly 70 of these stations are already complete. The company is also considering a scheme to install charging points at homes with a separate meter for it.
At the launch event of the EV charging station, BESCOM also took delivery of five electric vehicles in association with Baghirathi to be used by its senior staff. The company is also set to replace its ageing fleet of diesel-powered vehicles.
DriveSpark Thinks!
This, coming Just two days after the Government of Karnataka launched its eMobility Awareness Campaign and Baghirathi took delivery of 50 Mahindra e-Verito electric vehicles, shows that the Government of Karnataka is indeed taking green mobility seriously.
Electric vehicles were a trend at the Indian Auto Expo 2018 too, and the electric vehicle craze is only expected to grow in the Indian market. With such a huge potential in the market, and rapid growth of electric vehicles coming soon, organisations like BESCOM will have to take up initiatives like this. The electric vehicle revolution has begun.
