Autonomous Car Gets Pulled Over - A Hilarious Look Into The Future?
A General Motors Cruise autonomous taxi was recently pulled over by the police in San Francisco. What followed left the internet in splits.
A General Motors 'Cruise' autonomous vehicle was recently pulled over by the police. What followed left the internet in splits.
The car in question is a Chevrolet Bolt electric vehicle converted into an autonomous for the General Motors autonomous 'Cruise' taxi fleet. General Motors uses the autonomous Bolt EVs to give rides to employees around the cities.
The autonomous taxi in the video in question was flagged down in the Richmond district of San Francisco by a rather confused officer of the San Francisco police department on the 2nd of April. The reason for the autonomous vehicle being flagged down was apparently travelling around without its lights switched on.
In the video, you can see the police officer approaching the autonomous Bolt EV and then starting to look around confused that there is no one behind the wheel. Clearly confused because there was no one he could contact, the officer heads back to his car to determine what to do next.
It is just after this scene that the lights change colour and the Cruise autonomous taxi 'bolts' for freedom. However, instead of blasting away from the cops as any 'normal' offender would do, the autonomous taxi instead crosses the intersection, puts on its hazard lights and pulls over to a safe spot at the side of the road.
The police follow after the 'runaway' autonomous miscreant. This time the first police officer is joined by other cops who join forces to try and decide what to do about this rather unusual miscreant. Much to the amusement of the watching crowd, the cops try their level best to figure something out and even try to switch the lights out with no success whatsoever.
Due to the fact, that the autonomous taxi moved after the first stop many assumed that it had run for it. However, Cruise later confirmed on Twitter that the autonomous vehicle had followed proper protocol and that an officer had contacted Cruise personnel and no citation was issued.
Thoughts On The Autonomous Car Running From The Cops
The incident with the autonomous Chevy Bolt EV shows just how much the world will have to adjust if the dream of automation for vehicles is to be achieved. While the incident did generate quite a few laughs, we are glad that no one was hurt and that everything was resolved without incident.
