The Fiat-owned Italian brand, Alfa Romeo is making a return to Formula 1, for the first time since 1985. The group has already signed a multi-year agreement with the Swiss F1 team, Sauber.

Alfa Romeo's logo was present on Ferrari cars from this season of F1, but this agreement could give them a bigger title. F1 fanatics are sure that a new Alfa Romeo F1 era is about to commence.

Alfa Romeo was the first team to win the Formula One World Driver Championship in 1950, with the 158 and then in 1951, with their 159. They withdrew from F1 In 1952 after the Italian government refused to fund the development of a new car.

They returned in 1979 and raced till 1985, however without many successes. The Milan-based brand supplied engines to several teams from 1961 to 1979. Diehard Formula 1 fans know the legendary Alfa models like the 177, 185T and the infamous ‘Fan Car' - The Braham BT46B with a large fan at the back, to cool the Alfa Romeo-supplied engine.

Ferrari chairman and also the acting CEO of Fiat-Chrysler, Sergio Marchionne said, "This agreement with the Sauber F1 Team is a significant step in the reshaping of the Alfa Romeo brand, which will return to Formula 1 after an absence of more than 30 years."

Both brands, Alfa and Sauber, will mutually benefit by sharing technology and strategies with each other. Alfa Romeo witnessed a huge success with their road cars, Giulia and Stelvio, and the team is excited to go forward with this venture.

The new team will be named as ‘Alfa Romeo Sauber F1 Team' and might appoint Scuderia's junior drivers, Charles Leclerc and Antonio Giovinazzi.
