15 Year Old Vehicles To Be Scrapped – Gadkari Sends Directive To All State Governments
The union minister of the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, dropped a bombshell regarding older government-owned cars.
According to Nitin Gadkari, all government-owned cars older than 15 years will be scrapped and state governments have already received a directive from the Indian government regarding this matter.
Diving into details, Gadkari revealed the decision to scrap all government vehicles older than 15 years during the opening of the 2022 edition of Agrovision in Nagpur, and this included all types of central and state government-owned vehicles including cars, trucks and buses.
Speaking at the 2022 edition of Agrovision held in Nagpur, the chief of MoRTH stated, "Yesterday, I signed a file under the guidance of Prime Minister Narendra Modi that all the vehicles of the Indian government which have completed 15 years will be scrapped. I have sent this policy of the Indian government to all the states". Nitin Gadkari also added that all State governments should adopt the policy at the state level.
Earlier, the Government of India introduced the Scrappage policy back in February 2021, based on the 'Cash for Clunkers' programme in the US in order to attract owners of used cars to scrap their cars and reduce the number of polluting older cars off the roads.
However, the programme received less than like warm response in India despite making the recycling process simpler through authorised scrapyards, increasing the cost of renewal of older cars, and introducing special discounts while buying new cars. Moreover, according to a poll conducted revealed that a majority of car owners were not interested in buying a new car just because their existing car has aged.
Also, out of the 10,543 car owners who participated in the poll, a decent number of car owners intended to purchase fewer automobile post the introduction of scrappage policy as it will be more expensive to maintain an older car. Moreover, more than 57 per cent of the car owners who participated in the poll favoured that an older car should be scrapped on the basis of the odometer reading.
Thoughts About MoRTH's Decision To Scrap Older Vehicles
While according to the MoRTH minister, the new scrappage policy will reduce pollution levels in the country and also reduce the dependability on other countries for raw materials such as steel, aluminium, copper, rubber and plastic. Furthermore, the scrappage policy is likely to improve employment opportunities as well. However, the decision to scrap Government-owned vehicles older than 15 years is more than welcomed and sets an example to the general public.
