10 Monsoon Driving Tips You Should Follow
Driving in monsoon is a little tricky, especially during heavy downpours. So, here are 10 driving tips that will help you breeze past the monsoon without any hassles.
Avoid Unfamiliar Roads
During monsoon, it is always better to use a familiar road. This is because the condition of the road might be hidden due to flood water. Apart from that, if the new road goes through a low-lying area, the chances of water seeping into the engine and the interior are even higher.
Do Not Crank The Engine If Stalled
We highly recommend you not to drive through the flooded roads as it will be difficult to judge the depth of the water. However, if your car stalls on a flooded road, do not crank the engine as the water can get into the engine and this will damage the engine further. In this situation, the best thing to do is to call a tow truck.
Do Not Splash Through
While splashing water can be a fun activity for a few people, and some may even think splashing water will remove dirt from the underside. However, the water getting splashed has enough momentum to dislodge the bumper. Moreover, the water splash will deposit more dirt on the underside of the car.
Avoid Sudden Braking
Sudden braking will not only increase the chances of someone hitting your car from the rear but it will also increase the chances of water getting inside the engine. Water may get into the engine as the revs fall and this creates a vacuum and the flood water may get inside the engine via the exhaust.
Avoid Driving On The Outer Lane
The outer lanes of the road are generally lower and the chances of your car getting flooded will be high if you drive on it. Moreover, the outer lanes are more susceptible to damage and the probability of hitting a pothole is higher.
If You Are Not Sure, Wait
If the rain is heavy and if you are not sure about the condition of flood on the road, we highly recommend you to wait for the rain to reduce and proceed. While this may seem like costing time, it may have actually saved you from a flooded car and following expenses.
Do Not Squeeze Through The Traffic
Though this is a difficult task for many of my fellow citizens, doing this practice may encourage other people and may reduce congestion in future.
Keep Snacks & Water In Your Car
It is common to have long traffic jams during monsoon, so we recommend you to keep a few energy bars and a couple of water bottles.
Keep Foot On The Accelerator
If you are travelling through a flooded road and the water level is at your exhaust level, we recommend keeping a light foot on the accelerator pedal even if you are slowing down as falling revs can sip the water from the exhaust pipe. Keeping up the revs will allow you to wade through the water safely.
Check Brakes, Lights, Wipers & Washers
If is better to keep your brakes, lights, wiper and washer checked before that monsoon, as these can become crucial during heavy rains.
