The Suzuki Jimny Is Going Electric - Here's What We Know So Far
Japanese carmaker Suzuki has confirmed that the Jimny will soon go electric as part of its future plans for Europe.
Japanese carmaker Suzuki has confirmed that the Jimny will soon go electric as part of its future electrification plans for Europe.
The news was confirmed in a growth strategy document about the firm's European operations that has been doing the rounds of the interwebs which shows what the electric future of the brand will be like.
In the battery EV lineup in the document, five silhouettes are visible one of which definitely is the EVX concept unveiled at Auto Expo 2023. However, the boxy shape of the Jimny is what has left all the tounges wagging due to the popularity of the small SUV.
However, this is where all the details about the Jimny EV peter out. The current Jimny is quite a small SUV and that is not expected to change when it goes electric, so expect it to sit underneath the EVX in Suzuki's EV lineup.
While the EVX is expected to retain the 60kWh battery pack when it comes onto the roads in 2025. We expect the electric Jimny to sport a smaller battery pack when it arrives in Europe later in this decade.
However, we expect the electric Jimny to offer quite a bit more power compared to the current car's 1.5-litre petrol powerplant that pushes out 100bhp and 129Nm of peak torque. With the electric Jimny set to retain its offroad characteristics, the chance of a dual-motor version of the SUV does seem to be on the cards as well.
Suzuki's EV plans for Europe also show the presence of three other EVs including what seems to be a small hatchback or MPV and two other SUVs. Suzuki's plans for Europe will see the firm's new vehicle lineup consist of 80 per cent BEVs and 20 per cent hybrids by the year 2030. Suzuki however will not go fully down the EV rabbit hole just yet with the Japanese firm only set to go carbon neutral by the year 2070.
Thoughts About Suzuki Jimny EV
The iconic Suzuki Jimny is set to go down the BEV path in the near future as the firm charges down the EV path in Europe. This should mean that customers in Europe will finally be able to once again register the Jimny as a private vehicle as the current ICE model is only on sale as a commercial vehicle due to strict emission norms.
