Renault Cars To Get New Engines To Meet RDE Norms – Kwid, Triber & Kiger

Renault India will be soon rolling out its cars with new engines in order to meet the upcoming more stringent Real Driving Emission (RDE) norms.

These new emission norms are very difficult to meet as it demands the vehicle to meet emissions during real driving conditions and not just during lab conditions. As such, car manufacturers have to invest a lot of money in the development of RDE-compliant powertrains.

Thanks to these new stringent emission norms, many car manufacturers in India are dropping their less popular models just to save the development cost. Whereas some car manufacturers such as Hyundai are streamlining the powertrain options to reduce the development cost by using one type of engine on multiple models.

That being said, Renault India is also treading a similar path by using one basic engine across all its models in the country. This means, the new Renault cars in India will be powered by the automaker's 1.0-litre powertrain system, Moreover, this 1.0-litre powertrain will be available in naturally-aspirated and turbocharged options as well.

This means Renault will not be using the 0.8-litre engine in its Kwid hatchback from April 2023 onwards. However, the 1.0-litre engine in the Renault Kwid will be tuned slightly differently compared to the tuning of the 1.0-litre engine in the Renault Kiger and Triber models.

Furthermore, it is also worth mentioning that Renault will continue to offer the more powerful turbocharged variant of the Kiger SUV in India. This engine produces 28bhp more peak power compared to the standard Kiger SUV's 71bhp. Also, the peak torque output of the turbocharged unit is rated at 160Nm.
