Maruti Suzuki Jimny Exterior Design - Old School Bruiser Gets Stretched

The big change on the new Jimny comes in the form of the extra door and window on each side which has meant an increase in length, wheelbase and weight. However, everything else on the new Jimy looks almost identical to its predecessor.

At the front, the boxy and upright shape of the Jimny is further enhanced by the grille which features 5 vertical slats with chrome surrounds. The central one plays host to the Suzuki badge. The circular LED headlights and turn indicators are found on either side of the grille and add to the old-school looks of the Jimny.

The front bumper is made from a black plastic material as have the wheel arch extensions, side skirts, and rear bumper. The front bumper, which is angled at the wheels to help avoid obstacles, plays host to the fog lamps and a central air intake.

The Jimny rides on 15-inch wheels which are either full steelies or alloys depending on the variant of the SUV the owner has chosen. The wheel arch extensions enhance the muscular and boxy looks of the new Jimny SUV and are made of the same tough-textured black material as the bumpers. The new Jimny also sports a drip rail setup which allows for the easier addition of roof rails while also ensuring that rain doesn't drip off the roof when you enter or exit the vehicle during the wet season.

The biggest change in the new 5-door version of the Jimny is found on the sides of the SUV with the addition of the second row of doors. The extended length of the new 5-door Jimny has also led to the addition of new fixed three-quarter windows above the rear wheelarches.

At the rear, the Jimny is dominated by the spare wheel attached to the door. The entire rear lighting setup, except for the third brake light is found on the rear bumpers of the SUV.

The Maruti Suzuki Jimny is being offered up in 5 monotone colour options - Nexa Blue, Bluish Black, Granite Grey, Pearl Arctic White, and Sizzling Red. The Jimny is also offered in two dual-tone paint schemes with Sizzling Red and the Jimny's iconic Kinetic Yellow being offered up with a Bluish Black roof.

Maruti Suzuki Jimny Interior & Features

The Maruti Suzuki Jimny's interiors are as simple as ever. However, the addition of the new touchscreen infotainment system (offered in 7 and 9-inch sizes) brings quite a bit of extra tech which will be appreciated by the lifestyle buyers that are sure to buy the new Jimny.

The Jimny's multi-layered dashboard looks built for a purpose. Maruti Suzuki has retained the previous Jimny's simple design with circular a/c vents on either edge of the dash.

The dash serves a purpose with the horizontal line made by the dashboard and the vertical lines of the central console helping the driver figure out the Jimny's angle on an uneven surface. This is simple geometry at its best.

The hardcore simplicity is also seen on the surfaces of the Jimny's interior. Don't expect any soft touch as the materials of the cabin are meant to be scratch resistant and will suppress distractive reflections - ideal for some dune bashing in the desert.

Also seen is the fixed grab rail for the front passenger to cling onto when the going gets rough. The seats are designed to be comfortable and shock-absorbent which is ideal for a back-breaking crawl across rough and rocky terrain. However, the haphazard positioning of switches for various functions can be a bit bugging.

The new touchscreen infotainment is offered up in both 7 and 9-inch sizes and comes with quite a load of tech baked in. The infotainment screen supports wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay along with an Arkamys-enhanced sound system for all your needs in the wild.

The new Suzuki Jimny comes packed with a host of safety tech to keep you safe and to help you with your off-piste excursions. These features include the likes of up to 6 airbags, ABS with EBD, Brake Limited Slip Differential, Hill Hold Control, Hill Descent Control, Brake Assist, rearview camera and ISOFIX child seat anchors.

Maruti Suzuki Jimny - Specs & Dimensions

The new 5-door Maruti Suzuki Jimny is powered by a 1.5-litre petrol engine. However, this is not the K15C engine from the new Grand Vitara but instead is the older K15B powerplant.

Under the Jimny's clamshell bonnet, the K15B engine produces 103.4bhp at 6,000rpm and 134.2Nm of peak torque at 4,000rpm. The engine is offered with either a 5-speed manual (our preferred choice) or the firm's ancient 4-speed torque converter gearbox.

The Jimny sends power to all four wheels with the help of Suzuki's All Grip Pro four-wheel drive system and the SUV comes equipped with a low-range transfer box. In case you find two diagonally opposite wheels slipping, Jimny's Brake LSD will come to your rescue.

The Jimny continues to use a ladder frame chassis and 3-link suspension with rigid axles and coil springs which should excite the hardcore offroaders among you.

The Jimny is 3,985mm long (with the spare wheel attached), 1,645mm wide and 1,720mm tall. The wheelbase of the new Jimny is 2,590mm long, which is 340mm longer than its 3-door predecessor and the new SUV weighs 1,210kg at its heaviest. The new Jimny offers 210mm of ground clearance and 208 litres of boot space.

Thoughts About The Maruti Suzuki Jimny

The Maruti Suzuki Jimny is an off-roader done right at least on paper. While we'll be able to tell you more about the Jimny and how it behaves on and off the beaten path when we get behind the wheel (hopefully very soon). However, at first glance, the Jimny looks like a sure-shot winner for Maruti Suzuki and may just be the rival for the Mahindra Thar that we need.
