Maruti Suzuki Crosses 25 Million Domestic Sales Milestone
India's largest carmaker Maruti Suzuki recently went past the 25 million domestic sales milestone. Maruti Suzuki is the first carmaker in India to have achieved this milestone.
India's largest carmaker Maruti Suzuki recently went past the 25 million domestic sales milestone. Maruti Suzuki is the first carmaker in India to have achieved this milestone.
The 25 million domestic sales milestone comes just two months after the carmaker achieved the same number in terms of cumulative production in India in November, 2022.
The achievement of the domestic sales milestone comes in the same year that Maruti Suzuki is set to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the first car to be rolled off its production line - a Maruti 800 - in December 1983.
That first Maruti 800 rolled out of the carmaker's plant in Gurugram, Haryana. Since then the carmaker has rolled out millions of cars from its facilities in Gurugram and Manesar. The carmaker currently produces 1.5 million cars per annum and is set to expand its production further by setting up a new 800-acre production facility in Kharkhoda, Haryana.
The Maruti Suzuki journey began way back in 1982 when Suzuki signed a joint venture agreement with Maruti Udyog. The newly badged Maruti Suzuki rolled out its first car in December 1983 in the form of a Maruti 800. The Maruti 800 transformed the way India moved and soon became the bestselling car in the country.
In February 2006, Maruti Suzuki achieved the 5 million cumulative sales milestone and doubled that number six years later in February 2012. That number once again doubled to 20 million in just 7 years with Maruti hitting that milestone in July 2019. Despite a slowdown caused by the pandemic and supply chain issues, Maruti hit the 25 million cumulative sales number in November 2022.
Maruti currently sells 17 different models in the Indian car market ranging from entry-level hatchbacks like the Alto and S-Presso to the Vitara Brezza B-Segment SUV. The firm offers a variety of powertrains including petrol, CNG, and hybrid (both mild and strong).
Maruti first started selling cars with factory-fitted CNG setups back in August 2010. Last year in February, sales of Maruti Suzuki's S-CNG models hit the 1 million cumulative sales mark. Cumulative sales of hybrid (which started hitting the streets in September 2015) and CNG models combined are now approximately 2.1 million units.
Maruti Suzuki also revealed its plans for the future at this year's Auto Expo in Greater Noida when it revealed the EVX Concept, an EV that will the streets in the 2024 financial year. The EVX sports a 60kWh battery pack and a 550km driving range. The EVX will head a lineup of six Maruti Suzuki EVs that will hit our roads by 2030.
Thoughts About Maruti Suzuki's Domestic Sales Milestone
Maruti Suzuki has continued its domination of the nation's car market becoming the first carmaker to hit the 25 million mark in terms of domestic sales. With the carmaker shifting its focus to SUVs and EVs, Maruti Suzuki's domination of the car market looks set to continue for a lot more time.
