German car manufacturer Volkswagen has revealed the ID Aero concept in China. The Volkswagen ID Aero previews VW's upcoming flagship electric sedan.
Volkswagen ID Aero Concept Range
The Volkswagen ID Aero lives up to its name with a coefficient of drag of just 0.23. This low drag figure along with the 77kWh lithium-ion battery pack allows the VW ID Aero to cover 620 kilometres on a single charge as per WLTP testing standards. No figures regarding the electric motors or the charging speeds have been released as of now by VW.
Volkswagen ID Aero Design & Features
The Volkswagen ID Aero is based on the VW Group's MEB electric vehicle platform. The electric sedan concept which is almost 5 metres long features short overhangs, a long wheelbase and what VW claims is an exceptionally spacious interior.
The Volkswagen ID Aero concept features a short front end which houses recessed headlights connected to the VW badge in the centre by what appear to be LED light strips. The front bumper plays host to the three vertically stacked LED daytime running lights on each side and what appears to be a large air intake in the centre.
The Volkswagen ID Aero features a coupe-like roofline and also sports a character line running across its sides that connects the headlights to the taillights. The ID Aero concept from Volkswagen also features flush door handles and rides on 22-inch alloy wheels. The rear section of the VW ID Aero concept features LED taillights connected to the brand's illuminated logo in the centre by fully wraparound light bar sections that covers the entire width of the concept car at the rear.
Speaking at the unveiling of the new Volkswagen ID Aero, VW Passenger Cars CEO, Ralf Brandstätter said, "With the ID. AERO show car, we are revealing a preview of the next member of the ID. family. A car with an emotional and at the same time extremely aerodynamic design, a range of over 600 kilometres, an extraordinary amount of space and a premium interior. With our Accelerate strategy, we are intensively driving forward the electrification of our model range. Following the ID.4, this model will be our next global car for Europe, China and the US."
The production version of the Volkswagen ID Aero concept will be the 6th car in VW's pure EV ID lineup and will go on sale in the second half of 2023. The Chinese market will be the first to get the production version of ID Aero and will be followed by European and North American markets. The ID Aero will be built at Volkswagen's Emden plant in Germany which currently builds the Passat sedan.
