The Toyota Urban Cruiser SUV was one of the latest made in India vehicles tested by Global NCAP where it scored 13.52 points out of a total of 17 to secure a 4 star rating for adult safety.

The Toyota Urban Cruiser SUV was one of the latest made in India vehicles tested by Global NCAP where it scored 13.52 points out of a total of 17 to secure a 4 star rating for adult safety.

In terms of child safety, the Toyota Urban Cruiser earned a 3 star safety rating from the Global NCAP agency by scoring a total of 36.68 out of a total of 49 points.

The Toyota Urban Cruiser used for the testing process by the Global NCAP team was the base model equipped with safety features like two airbags, ABS, seatbelt pretensioners, seat belt reminders for the front seats and ISOFIX anchor points to mount child seats.

The Toyota Urban Cruiser was crash tested only for frontal offset by Global NCAP at 64km/h. As per the testing notes issued by Global NCAP, the Toyota Urban Cruiser offered good protection to the heads and necks of the driver and passenger. While the protection offered to the front passenger's chest was deemed to be good, the driver's chest only receives adequate protection in case of a crash.

In fact, the only section of the front passenger's body that was deemed not to be offered good protection was the right knee where the protection was deemed to be marginal. The Urban Cruiser's driver's knee area only recieved a marginal rating for safety for both sides while the protection for the tibias was deemed to be adequte.

The body shell of the Toyota Urban Cruiser was rated to be stable as was the footwell. The testers also conlcuded that the body shell was capable of withstanding further impacts.

The testers aso noted that the Urban Cruiser with the child seat fitted in a forward facing position for a 3-year-old prevented excesive forward movement of the head, while providing low protection for the neck and fair protection to the chest. The rearward facing seat for the 18-month-old child supported the legs while providing good protection to the head and chest areas.

The Toyota Urban Cruiser is in essence a rebadged Maruti Suzuki Brezza and while both SUVs garnered the same star rating, it was the Toyota that outscored its Maruti cousin. While the Urban Cruiser scored 13.52/17 for adult safety, the Brezza got 12.51 points. However, in terms of protecting children, the Toyota beat its Suzuki suiblings by a big margin with the Urban Cruiser scoring 36.68 points compared to the Brezza's 17.93 points.

Thoughts on The Toyota Urban Cruiser's Performance at GNCAP

The Toyota Urban Cruiser performed rather well at Global NCAP. However, this test really won't matter for a long time as Maruti is readying a new version of the Brezza which features a sheet metal refresh along with more safety features. With Urban Cruiser set to follow in the footsteps its badged cousin, we expect the next-gen SUV to be quite a step up in terms of safety equipment offered as standard. With cars set to get safer later this year, we could expect an even better showing from the Toyota when the GNCAP team returns to pick up the next-gen Urban Cruiser for its stint with the crash tests.
