Toyota Sees Growth In December 2021
Toyota sees growth in December 2021 as cars such as Glanza, Urban Cruiser, Innova Crysta, and Fortuner perform well in the market.
Though the fear of pandemic and the following lockdown restrictions during the year-end were looming in the air, the Japanese brand performed well in the Indian market.
Toyota India sold 10,832 units of their cars in December 2021, which is a substantial growth compared to 7,487 units reported in December 2020. This means Toyota India has witnessed a Y-o-Y growth of almost 45 per cent with a volume gain of 3,345 units.
In 2021, the first quarter has been the strongest for Toyota India with 40,192 units sold in Q1 alone. This is again another substantial growth for Toyota India as the brand managed to sell just 23,179 units in the first quarter of the previous year.
However, Toyota could not sustain the same momentum in the second quarter of 2021 as the pandemic related difficulties quickly caught up to the market. This resulted in Toyota India's wholesale numbers falling below 20,000 units during the second quarter.
For the third quarter of 2021, Toyota India's sales again shot up and the company sold 35,156 units. Moreover, Toyota India carried forward this momentum to Q4 and sold 36,274 units.
Overall, Toyota India sold 1,30,748 units in 2021. This shows that the Japanese car manufacturer has strongly recovered from the pandemic-hit 2020, where the Japanese brand could only manage to sell 76,111 units - An increase of 54,637 units.
Due to the lack-lustre performance in Q2, Toyota India's sales performance during the first half of 2021 is somewhat lower when compared to the second half of 2021.
We expect Toyota India to perform even better in 2022 as the brand is gearing up to launch the Toyota Hilux in India.
The Toyota Hilux was even spotted without any camouflage in Cybercity Gurgaon during the TVC shoot of the vehicle. This means Toyota India is very close to launching the Hilux in India.
The Toyota Hilux will be slightly longer than both the Toyota Fortuner and Toyota Innova Crysta despite sharing the IMV-2 platform.
To support the extra length, the upcoming Toyota Hilux will also come with a slightly longer wheelbase at 3,085mm, which is around 335 mm longer than the Toyota Innova Crysta and 340mm longer than the Toyota Fortuner.
When launched in India, the Toyota Hilux will rival the Isuzu V-Cross and Isuzu Highlander as these are the only other lifestyle pickup trucks currently on sale in India.
The upcoming Toyota Hilux is more likely to sport features such as an 8.0-inch infotainment unit with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, auto climate control, steering mounted controls, and a few more.
We also expect Toyota to offer two engine options for the Hilux - The 148 bhp 2.4-litre diesel unit from the Toyota Innova Crysta and the more potent 201 bhp 2.8-litre diesel unit from the Toyota Fortuner.
Toyota is also more likely to offer both the 6-speed manual and automatic transmissions. However, the 4X4 variant could be limited to just top-end variants equipped with 2.8-litre engines. Moreover, Toyota may price the Hilux for around Rs 25 lakh to Rs 32 lakh in India.
Thoughts About Toyota India
Toyota has been very successful in India, but the recent pandemic has hit Toyota hard. However, the wholesale data has shown that the Japanese brand is on course to a great recovery.
