Toyota has retained its title of the world's largest car manufacturer for the second year in a row. Toyota has released its sales figures for the 2021 calendar year and at 10.5 million vehicles sold, the automobile manufacturer has reported a growth of 10.1 percent.
Toyota has for a long time been one of the largest automobile manufacturers in the world. Some of its models like the Toyota Hilux and Toyota Corolla have been bestsellers in several international markets. Some of Toyota's models are sold in over 180 countries and turn out to be the favourites in almost all of those countries.
Among these models are some legendary names like Land Cruiser, Prado, Hilux, Tundra, Tacoma, Venza, Corolla, etc. These vehicles have carved out a niche for themselves even though they are mainstream cars.
In the Indian market too, Toyota's vehicles command great respect. The Toyota Fortuner, Innova, Qualis, Corolla, and Camry are all legendary names and have been brands that people aspire to own. Most of these cars do not require any major repairs until they have a few lakh kilometres on the clock.
Quite simply then, it is easy to see why Toyotas sell well. Then come Toyota's subsidiaries and sub-divisions. Brands like Lexus, Ranz, Scion, Daihatsu, and Hino are all a part of the Toyota brand. Cars sold by these companies too have been taken into account and have pushed Toyota to become the largest car manufacturer in the world.
Toyota has once again pipped the Volkswagen group in order to retain this title. The Volkswagen group, which consists of brands like Volkswagen, Audi, Ducati, Lamborghini, Skoda, SEAT, Bentley, Scania, Traton, etc, recorded a cumulative sales number of 8.9 million vehicles.
It has been an ongoing battle between Toyota and its brands and the VW Group. Back in 2016, VW took the title of the largest car manufacturer from Toyota and retained the title in 2017, 2018, and 2019. Toyota reclaimed this title in 2020 and now for 2021 as well.
Both auto giants are expected to battle it out for 2022 as well. However, this year might turn out to be challenging for both brands. Volkswagen has started off with a low sales number in the first place. 8.9 million vehicles is the lowest figure seen by the VW group in around 10 years.
Toyota on the other hand has gotten off to a rough start due to the COVID-19 outbreak in Japan. The brand will halt production at its plants in Japan to curb the spread of the virus which has been affecting automobile workers in the country. This is expected to reduce production by a large margin.
Adding to this are a few common challenges faced by all automotive manufacturers globally. This includes pandemic-related curfews and lockdowns, and then of course there is the global chip shortage that has affected all car makers.
Despite all of this, both Toyota and VW will be looking to improve their respective sales numbers. Both brands have got some brilliant products lined up to be launched, not just in India, but in International markets as well.
In India, we have the Toyota Hilux, Toyota Belta, and Toyota Rumion to look forward to, and these products are bound to increase Toyota's sales numbers.
Thoughts On Toyota Being The Largest Car Manufacturer In The World In 2021
For several decades now, Toyota has been producing some brilliant vehicles and this is primarily the reason for it to be the largest car manufacturer in the world. 2022 is bound to be an interesting year for the brand and we expect some brilliant Toyota cars to be launched.
