It was only a couple of weeks ago that Toyota's dealerships stopped taking bookings for the Toyota Innova diesel. Toyota issued a statement clarifying that the bookings for the Innova diesel were only temporarily stopped due to excessive demand. Now though, new reports have emerged stating that the MUV has been temporarily discontinued because it failed emissions tests.

The Toyota Innova is without a doubt, India's favourite MUV. It was first launched in 2005 and Indians instantly took a liking to it. Lakhs of units were sold and one can barely anybody who would complain of the Innova. Toyota's legendary reliability only bolstered the Innova's capabilities.

After nearly two decades of being the go-to MUV in India, Toyota dealerships in India recently stopped taking bookings for the Innova diesel. Though Toyota sells a petrol variant of the Innova, it was the diesel that sold the most. Hence it was a shocker for the auto industry when Toyota suddenly stopped selling the Innova diesel.

The clarification issued by Toyota on the same matter stated, "Due to very high demand pattern which has resulted in an increased waiting period for the diesel variant of Innova Crysta, TKM has decided to temporarily stop taking orders for the diesel variant. However, we will continue to take orders for the Petrol variant of Innova Crysta."

Now, reports have suggested that the production has been temporarily halted because of another reason. It is being said that the diesel-powered Innova Crysta failed the recent round of COP (Conformity Of Production) tests. These are tests conducted by ICAT or ARAI to verify if production models adhere to type approval and homologation. These are speculations and rumours at the moment and cannot be confirmed.

Even if it is true, we can say with certainty that the Toyota Innova diesel will re-enter production towards the end of the year or early in 2023. Toyota India will be looking into working on the emissions and then send it for the COP tests again.
