In April 2022, Indians bought a total of 2,150 electric cars which was a Year-over-Year gain of 260 per cent compared to the same period last year. In April 2021, only 597 electric cars were sold in the Indian automotive market. In terms of Month-over-Month sales, numbers were down by 40.67 per cent compared to the 3,624 units sold in March 2022.

Top Best Selling Car Brands In India (April 2022)

1) Tata Motors - 1,802 units

In April 2022, Tata Motors the nation's largest EV car manufacturer sold a total of 1,802 units of the Nexon and Tigor EVs. This was an increase of 320.05 per cent (1,373 units) over the same period last year when it sold just 429 EVs.

However, Month-over-Month sales dropped by 47.54 per cent (1,633 units) from March 2022 when the carmaker sold 3,435 EVs.

2) MG- 245 units

Chinese owner British marque MG offers the ZS electric SUV as its sole offering for the Indian market. MG recently updated the ZS EV and the carmaker sold 245 units of the electric SUV in April 2022. MG's EV sales grew by 65.54 per cent (97 units) Y-o-Y compared to the fourth month of 2021, when it sold only 148 units.
MG's M-o-M sales were also up significantly rising by 157.89 per cent over (150 units) compared to March 2022 when it sold just 98 ZS EVs.

3) Hyundai - 23 units

Hyundai currently has only one all-electric offering for the Indian market in the form of the Kona EV. The Korean carmaker will soon be launching its flagship Ioniq 5 electric crossover in the Indian market. Hyundai sold just 23 units of the Kona in April 2022 which was up 130 per cent (13 units) compared to its numbers from April 2021. In terms of M-o-M growth, Hyundai's EV sales in India increased by 27.78 per cent (5 units) compared to March 2022 when it sold 18 units of the Kona.

4) BYD - 21 units

Chinese firm BYD which recently arrived in the country and only sells to only B2B customers shipped out 21 units of its e6 electric MPV in April 2022. In terms of Month-over-Month growth, BYD sales rose b4) BYD - 21 unitsy 16.67 per cent (3 units) compared to March 2022 when it sold 18 e6 electric MPVs.

5) BMW - 17 units

German luxury carmaker BMW was the best selling luxury EV brand in the country for April 2022 selling 17 units of its recently launched iX electric SUV in the Indian market. M-o-M sales for BMW were up by 88.89 per cent (8 units) compared to March 2022 when it sold only 9 EVs in India. The Bavarian carmaker is set to launch the all-electric i4 sedan later this month in India

6) Mahindra - 13 units

Indian carmaker Mahindra which was an early proponent of electric cars in India currently only sells the eVerito electric sedan in India. The company is the middle of revamping its electric lineup with three new EVs set to arrive in July.

Mahindra's Y-o-Y sales were up by 225 per cent (9 units) compared to April 2022 when it sold only 9 eVeritos. Month-over-Month sales though dropped by 27.78 per cent (5 units) compared to March, when 18 units of the eVerito left Mahindra showrooms.

7) Mercedes-Benz - 10 units

German luxury carmaker is the last carmaker on this list to reach double figures with 10 units of the EQC electric SUV. M-o-M sales of the EQC grew by 66.67 per cent (4 units) compared to March 2022 when Mercedes sold 6 units of the electric SUV.

8) Audi - 8 units

German luxury carmaker Audi, which sells the e-tron SUV and e-tron GT sedan, only sold 8 EVs in April 2022. This was a 50 per cent (8 units) drop in terms of Month-over-Month sales compared to March when it sold 16 EVs.

9) Porsche - 4 units

German sports car manufacturer Porsche sold 4 units of the Taycan four-door electric sedan. This was a drop of 33.33 per cent (1 unit) compared to March 2022 when it sold 3 units.

10) Jaguar - 3 units

Tata-owned British luxury carmaker Jaguar sold 3 units of the i-Pace SUV in the month of April. This was both a Y-o-Y and M-o-M sales growth of 200 per cent (2 units) compared to April 2021 and March 2021 respectively when Jaguar sold just a solitary unit each.

Other electric carmakers combined to sell a total of 4 units of electric cars in the month of April 2022 bringing the total sales numbers to 2,150 units.

The EV car market is still in its early phases of life and shows off a great potential to grow even further. Tata Motors continues to dominate the segment with a market share of over 83 per cent and as it continues to expand its own lineup other carmakers are slowly but surely readying their own EVs for the Indian car market. With a switch to electric power confirmed for our future, the Indian electric car market only has one way to go - upwards.
