Passenger vehicle sales in India rose by 91.32 per cent Year-over-Year in September 2022 compared to the same period last year. Meanwhile, Month-over-Month sales also rose by 8.11 per cent compared to August 2022.

Carmakers sold a total of 3,54,947 cars in the wholesale market last month with Maruti Suzuki once again accounting for just over 40 per cent of the passenger vehicles sold. Hyundai and Tata Motors continue their squabble over the final two places on the podium. Mahindra had another record month as it consolidated its hold on 4th spot while Kia rounded off the top 5.

1 - Maruti Suzuki- 1,48,380 Units

India's largest carmaker Maruti Suzuki sold a total of 1,48,380 passenger vehicles last month. Y-o-Y sales rose by 135.11 per cent (85,269 units) compared to 63,111 units sold in September 2021. M-o-M sales for Maruti also rose by 10.59 per cent (14,214 units) compared to August 2022.

2 - Hyundai - 49,700 Units

South Korean carmaker Hyundai sold a total of 49,700 cars and SUVs in India last month. Hyundai's Y-o-Y numbers were up by 16,613 units (50.21 per cent) compared to September 2021's 33,087 units. M-o-M numbers rose very slightly - by 190 units (0.38 per cent) compared to August's 49,510 units.

3 - Tata Motors - 47,654 Units

Tata Motors continued its strong run of sales selling a total of 47,654 units. Tata's Y-o-Y sales numbers were up by 85.21 per cent (21,924 units) compared to September 2021's 21,924 units. Tata's M-o-M numbers rose ever so slightly by 488 units or 1.03 per cent compared to August's 47,166 units.

4 - Mahindra - 34,508 Units

Mahindra strengthened its hold on the 4th spot in the Indian car market by once again becoming the most popular force in the SUV segment. In August 2022, Mahindra sold 34,508 passenger vehicles. Mahindra's Y-o-Y numbers were up by 168.27 per cent or 21,645 units compared to September 2021's 12,863 units. Mahindra's M-o-M numbers were also in the black, rising by 15.6 per cent or 4,656 units compared to August 2022's 29,852 units.

5 - Kia - 25,857 Units

South Korean carmaker Kia sold a total of 25,857 vehicles in India in September 2022. Kia' Y-o-Y sales rose by 79.05 or 11,416 units compared to August 2021's 14,441 units. Kia's M-o-M sales were also in the black, rising by 3,535 units or 15.84 per cent compared to August 2022's 23,332 units.

Staking claim to the 6th spot once again was Toyota with the Japanese marque selling a total of 15,378 units last month. Toyota's Y-o-Y numbers were up by 6,094 units (65.64 per cent) compared to September 2021's 9,284 units. M-o-M numbers also grew by 2.80 per cent or 419 units compared to August 2022's 14,959 units.

Honda took 7th spot selling 8,714 units in September 2022. Honda's Y-o-Y sales numbers rose by 28.81 per cent (1,949 units) compared to the same period last year when it sold 6,765 units. M-o-M numbers for the Japanese marque also rose by 12.16 per cent or 945 units compared to August 2022's 7,769 units.

French carmaker Renault took the 8th spot, selling 7,623 passenger vehicles last month. Renault's Y-o-Y sales numbers were up by 4.05 per cent (297 units) compared to September 2021 when it sold 7,326 units. Renault's M-o-M sales numbers were also in the black, rising by 8.71 per cent or 611 units compared to August 2021's 7,012 units.

Volkswagen was the surprising entrant on this month's top 10 list with the German marque selling 4,103 units last month to claim the 9th spot. Volkswagen's Y-o-Y sales were up by 1,540 units or 60.09 per cent compared to September 2021's 2,563 units. M-o-M sales were also up, rising by 2,052 units or 99.95 per cent compared to August 2022's 2,051 units.

MG claimed the final spot on this list selling 3,808 units last month. MG's Y-o-Y numbers rose by 17.49 per cent or 567 units compared to September 2021 when the British marque sold 3,241 units. M-o-M sales though dipped marginally by 15 units (0.39 per cent) compared to the previous month when MG sold 3,823 units.

The Indian car market once again was in the black for the month of September 2022 as prospective buyers across the country took advantage of attractive offers for the upcoming festive period. We expect these numbers to once again rise this month with both Dusshera and Diwali set to be celebrated in October.
