Tata Tiago CNG Vs Maruti Suzuki Celerio CNG: Design, Powertrain & More
The new Maruti Suzuki Celerio is a small hatchback and the Indo-Japanese company has now launched the CNG variant of the Celerio hatchback in India. That being said, Tata Motors has also launched the CNG variant of the Tata Tiago in India.
So, which one is the better CNG hatchback in India? To know, we shall compare both these CNG hatchbacks in terms of their Design, Features, Powertrain, Safety and Price.
Design
In terms of the design, the CNG variant of the Tata Tiago looks identical to their petrol-powered counterparts albeit with the addition of 'i CNG' badging to distinguish themselves from the standard petrol-powered variants.
That being said, the CNG version of the new Maruti Suzuki Celerio looks identical to the conventional petrol-powered Maruti Suzuki Celerio from every angle and overall a lot more fresh in comparison to the Tata Tiago as the 2nd generation of the Maruti Suzuki Celerio hatchback was recently launched in the country.
However, at the end of the day, what matters is your personal preference as looks are highly subjective.
Features
In terms of features, the CNG variant of the Tata Tiago comes equipped with features such as Projector headlamps, LED DRLs, Rear wash wiper with defogger, 7-inch Harman infotainment system with 8-speakers, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, power windows, central door locking, electrically adjustable ORVMsand many more. Moreover, the CNG variant of the Tata Tiago is available in four different trim levels.
On the other hand, the CNG version of the Maruti Suzuki Celerio is available in just one trim level -'VXi', and it comes with features such as Day Night IRVM, 60:40 split rear seats, power windows, central door locking, electrically adjustable ORVMs, and a few more.
This means, the Tata Tiago is not only better equipped but it comes with multiple trim levels to choose from.
Powertrain
The Tata Tiago uses the same tried-and-tested 1.2-litre naturally-aspirated engine as its petrol-powered counterparts. This engine produces 84.82bhp and 113Nm of torque in standard form, with the CNG fuel, this engine produces slightly lower power and torque outputs at 73bhp and 95Nm of torque.
Unlike the petrol-powered versions of the Tata Tiago, the CNG versions of the Tata Tiago comes with the 5-speed manual transmission as standard.
Like the Tata Tiago, the new Maruti Suzuki Celerio CNG also uses the same engine as its petrol-powered counterpart. However, the 1.0-litre K10C series engine in the Maruti Suzuki Celerio is 0.2-litre smaller than the engine in the Tata Tiago.
While this engine produces 65.7bhp and 89Nm of torque in the standard format, the power and torque figures are slightly down at 56bhp and 82.1Nm of torque while using the CNG fuel.
Both the CNG variants of the Tata Tiago and the new Maruti Suzuki Celerio come equipped with a 60-litre CNG tank and both companies have re-tuned the suspension setup of their respective vehicles to cope with the added weight of the factory-fitted CNG kit.
Safety
The newly launched CNG version of the Tata Tiago is also one of the safest cars in India as the conventional variant of the Tata Tiago has scored a respectable 4-star safety rating for adult protection by Global-NCAP.
Apart from that, the CNG variant of the Tata Tiago comes equipped with safety features such as ABS with EBD, dual airbags, reverse parking sensors, cornering stability control, speed-sensitive auto door lock and many more.
In terms of safety, the new Maruti Suzuki Celerio also comes with a factory-fitted CNG kit and the company claims that the Celerio also has a special leak-proof design.
Apart from that, the CNG variant of the new Maruti Suzuki Celerio comes equipped with safety features such as two airbags, speed-sensitive auto door lock, ABS, Immobilizer, child-proof rear door locks, reverse parking sensors and many more.
Price
The CNG version of the Tata Tiago is available in four trim levels and prices for the CNG version of the Tiago range starts at Rs 6.09 lakh (ex-showroom, India) for the base 'XE' variant and goes all the way up to Rs 7.52 lakh (ex-showroom, India) for the top-spec 'XZ+' trim level. Whereas the XM and XT trim levels are priced at Rs 6.39 lakh and Rs 6.69 lakh, respectively.
As mentioned earlier, the Maruti Suzuki Celerio is available in just one trim level and the CNG variant of the Maruti Suzuki Celerio is priced at Rs 6.58 lakh (ex-showroom, India).
This means the entry-level version of the CNG variant of the Tata Tiago is almost Rs 50,000 cheaper than the CNG variant of the Maruti Suzuki Celerio and for that price difference, one could fill 900+kgs of CNG.
Thoughts About The CNG Variants Of The Tata Tiago & The Maruti Suzuki Celerio
With the ever-tightening emission regulations in metro cities, opting for the CNG variants of cars makes even more sense as CNG cars produce far fewer pollutants and are highly unlikely to be banned anytime soon.
In this comparison, the base version of the CNG variant of the Tata Tiago offers tremendous savings and it is our VFM choice.
