Nissan Micra Replacement Will Be Fully Electric
Japanese carmaker Nissan will replace the Micra with an all-new electric hatchback based on the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi alliance's new CMF-BEV platform. The new Micra replacement forms part of a 23 billion Euro investment by the three carmakers as they accelerate their electrification push which will see them 35 new EV models by the year 2030.
The Nissan Micra replacement CMF-BEV setup is one of five platforms developed by the alliance for its upcoming electric cars. The five platforms will account for 90 per cent of the 35 new EV models that the alliance plans to hit the streets with by 2030.
The five new electric platforms from the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi alliance are - CMF-AEV, KEI-EV, LCV-EV, CMF-EV and the aforementioned CMF-BEV.
The CMF-AEV platform will underpin the new Dacia Spring city car, a vehicle that is quite similar to the Renault Kwid sold in India in terms of looks. The current Dacia Spring, which is based on Renault's current CMF-A platform is one of the most affordable electric cars currently on sale in Europe.
The KEI-EV platform will be limited to the Japanese market. The KEI-EV platform will underpin the next generation of Kei micro cars that are such an integral part of the Japanese automotive industry. The LCV-EV as the name suggest will underpin a fleet of electric light commercial vehicles including the Renault Kangoo and the Nissan Town Star.
The CMF-EV platform will underpin 15 new electric cars that the alliance plans to bring out by the year 2030. The Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi alliance claims that by the start of the next decade, it will be producing 1.5 million cars on the CMF-EV platform every year. The platform will feature a new high-performance motor and ultra-thin battery setup and will underpin the upcoming Nissan Ariya EV and the Renault Megane E-Tech Electric.
The final platform will be the CMF-BEV platform that will be the basis for the replacement for the current Nissan Micra. The new CMF-BEV platform claims the alliance will the base for 250,000 vehicles a year under the Renault, Nissan and Alpine brands. The alliance claims that the new CMF-BEV platform will help reduce cost by 33 per cent and consume 10 per cent less power compared to the current Renault ZOE electric car.
The alliance claims that the new CMF-BEV platform will allow its electric cars to have a range of up to 400 kilometres, so expect the Nissan Micra to go a long way before it needs to plug in and recharge. Other than the Micra replacement, the new CMF-BEV platform will also underpin the upcoming Renault R5.
Nissan has stated that the new Micra replacement will be designed by the Japanese carmaker but will be engineered by its French Alliance partner Renault. The electric replacement for the Micra will be manufactured at Renault ElectriCity, the alliance's electric industrial in northern France. Expect the Micra replacement to arrive in 2024 when the new CMF-EV platform officially hits the production lines.
The alliance has also stated that it will have a total of 220 GWh battery production capacity by the year 2030 across key EV production in the world. The alliance also reiterated its aim to mass-produce all-solid-state batteries by mid-2028, which it claims will bring down EV costs to $65/kWh.
Thoughts On The Electric Micra Replacement
The Nissan Micra has been the workhorse of Nissan's lineup, especially in Europe. With the switch to EVs accelerating, it comes as no surprise that the Japanese carmaker is planning to replace the current Micra with a fully electric car. Whether or not the new car retains the Micra badge is something only time will tell.
