Mercedes Partners With ProLogium To Develop Next-Gen Solid-State EV Batteries
German luxury carmaker Mercedes Benz has teamed up with Taiwanese battery manufacturer ProLogium to develop next-gen solid-state batteries for electric vehicles.
The German luxury car marque plans to go all-electric by 2030 wherever market conditions allow and the new technology cooperation agreement with ProLogium will allow Mercedes to fast track its electrification push. Mercedes has stated that its first test EVs equipped with solid-state batteries developed in collaboration with the Taiwanese firm will be introduced in the coming years.
The agreement signed by Mercedes Benz and ProLogium also agrees on milestones that would see these new next-generation solid-state battery packs make their way into a range of passenger vehicles from the luxury German marque by the second half of this decade.
As per the agreement signed by the two firms, Mercedes-Benz will make a high double-digit million euro investment into the Taiwanese firm though an official number is yet to be revealed. Mercedes-Benz will also become a member of ProLogium's board of directors. ProLogium will use the investment by Mercedes to support the development of the technology and ProLogium's plan of establishing production capacity in Europe.
Speaking about the new partnership between Mercedes and ProLogium, Markus Schäfer, Member of the Board of Management of Daimler AG and Mercedes-Benz AG, Chief Technology Officer responsible for Development and Procurement, said, "We believe that range and efficiency are the new industry benchmarks for electric cars. Solid-state technology helps to cut down battery size and weight. This is why we are partnering with companies like ProLogium to ensure that Mercedes-Benz continues to break new ground in the automotive sector - for the benefit of our customers."
Speaking about his company's new partnership with Mercedes-Benz, ProLogium Technology CEO and Co-Founder, Vincent Yang said, "We have been working with Mercedes-Benz on the testing of our EV battery cells since 2016 and are excited to strengthen and expand our partnership. We expect to work with Mercedes-Benz to demonstrate the effective application of our safe, high-performance solid-state battery cells to meet the Mercedes-Benz top quality standards. At ProLogium, we believe that innovative technology must be backed by the scalability of production. We look forward to ramping up our new plant by the end of 2022 and working with our customers toward successful mass production."
ProLogium is the latest battery manufacturer to tie up with Mercedes-Benz as the German auto giant looks to catch up with current EV leader Tesla. The German luxury car marque has already tied up with Factorial Energy, Farasis Energy and Automotive Cells Co.
The latest tie-up with ProLogium Technologies will see Mercedes push ahead into the world of Solid-State battery packs. Solid-state batteries are seen as the future for battery electric vehicles as they can store more energy and also charge faster than the current lithium-ion battery packs. Solid-State batteries are also said to be a lot safer than Lithium-ion cells which use liquid electrolytes to carry charge between electrodes.
Founded in 2006, ProLogium's proprietary technologies currently cover over 480 patents worldwide. The Taiwanese company is currently in the process of setting up a GWh battery production facility near Taipei which it will complete by the end of 2022.
Thoughts On The Mercedes & ProLogium Deal
German luxury carmaker Mercedes is going full speed ahead with its push to go fully electric by 2030. With its latest partnership with ProLogium, Mercedes will be bringing solid-state batteries to its vehicles by the second half of the 2020s, the advantages of which will surely help it carve out a big share of the EV market currently dominated by its former partner Tesla.
