Here's Everything You Need To Know About The Upcoming Mercedes-AMG C63 S E Performance
The big news about the upcoming Mercedes-AMG C63 Performance S E is its powertrain, as the sedan will no longer be powered by a twin-turbocharged V8 powertrain. Instead, the upcoming fully-strung performance sedan from Mercedes-AMG will be powered by a hybrid powertrain with a 4-cylinder turbocharged engine as its heart.
Engine
This is no joke. The next-generation C63 sedan will sport a plug-in hybrid powertrain setup. This hybrid unit consists of a 2.0-litre, turbocharged, 4-cylinder engine and an electric motor. Moreover, looking at the numbers, it is clear that AMG has thrown in everything to shut the noise about losing 4 cylinders.
The combined output of this setup is rated at 671bhp and 1020Nm. While this figure itself is astonishing, the internal combustion engine alone puts out a mammoth 469bhp of peak power at 6,750rpm and 545Nm of peak torque between 5,250rpm and 5,500rpm.
The secret to such massive power from a tiny 4-cylinder engine is a sophisticated electric turbocharger. This electric motor paired with the turbocharger not only eliminates the turbo lag at low revs, but also allows engineers to use a larger turbocharger along with the engine without worrying about the turbo lag.
Gearbox & Drivetrain
As many have guessed, the upcoming new Mercedes-AMG C63 S E Performance is an all-wheel-drive sedan. While the 201bhp electric motor uses a 2-speed automatic gearbox, the internal combustion engine is paired with a 9-speed automatic transmission.
Drive Modes
If you think the powertrain setup is complicated, it is nothing compared to drive modes. While most performance cars nowadays have 4 or 5 drive modes, the upcoming new Mercedes-AMG C63 S E Performance sports 8 driver modes - Electric, Comfort, Battery, Hold, Sport, Sport+, Race, Slippery, and Individual.
In addition to all this, the upcoming new Mercedes-AMG C63 S E Performance also comes with 5 different battery recuperation modes, out of which 4 are regular modes, whereas the fifth mode can only be accessed in the 'race' mode.
Performance
The upcoming new C63 not only lost a few cylinders under its bonnet, but it had also shed some time to reach particular speeds. For starters, the upcoming new Mercedes-AMG C63 S E Performance sedan can reach 100km/h from a standstill in just 3.4seconds, whereas the topspeed is limited to 250km/h. However, customers can raise the topspeed to 280km/h as well (270km/h for the Estate version).
Body
The upcoming new Mercedes-AMG C63 S E Performance is available in two body shapes - Sedan, and Estate. If you have the beans and planning to buy one, buy the estate version - It just looks cool.
Design
It is not a pretty-looking machine, but it looks menacing and can turn heads wherever it goes. In addition to that, the front section of the upcoming new Mercedes-AMG C63 S E Performance is slightly longer than the standard model to make extra room to house the cooling systems.
Apart from that, the model also features a power bulge and central air vents on the bonnet, more pronounced side skirts, flared wheel arches, quad tailpipes, a spoiler and a few more additional design elements to make the model look a bit more menacing.
Though not many changes have been introduced on the inside, the model does sport a sportier steering wheel with a few additional dials and buttons to easily access different performance-related menus. Moreover, the upcoming new Mercedes-AMG C63 S E Performance also sports AMG bucket seats at the front.
EV Mode
The upcoming new Mercedes-AMG C63 S E Performance sports a 6.1kWh battery pack that has been designed not to compete with cars like Toyota Prius, but to put bigger smiles while accelerating. As such, the new Mercedes-AMG C63 S E Performance in electric mode is good for just 13 kilometres.
This means, travel from Bangalore to Chennai using Electric mode in the upcoming Mercedes-AMG C63 S E Performance will take 27 or more stops for charging alone.
Thoughts About The Upcoming New Mercedes-AMG C63 S E Performance
Reading the headline figures, it is hard to notice the loss of 4 cylinders under the bonnet. However, we have to wait a bit more to tell you more about how this model behaves in real-world conditions.
