Maserati Grecale SUV Revealed - EV Variant To Arrive Next Year
Italian luxury carmaker Maserati has revealed the Grecale. The Maserati Grecale is the Italian marque's second-ever SUV and will spawn the carmaker's first pure EV model next year.
Italian luxury carmaker Maserati has revealed the Grecale. The Maserati Grecale is the Italian firm's second-ever SUV and while the current lineup only features petrol and hybrid powerplants, a pure EV version (a first for the marque) will arrive in 12 months time.
Maserati Grecale Specs & Dimensions
The Maserati Grecale is offered in both regular petrol and hybrid guises. The Grecale GT and Modena models are powered by a 2.0-litre four cylinder engine that is aided by a belt-integrated starter generator and a 48V battery which aids economy figures while also providing a slight boost during acceleration.
In the Grecale GT, the engine produces 296bhp and 450Nm of torque. In the Grecale Modena variant, power is upped to 325bhp, while the torque figure remains unchanged. The Grecale GT can sprint from 0-100km/h in 5.6 seconds. The Grecale Modena does the sprint three tenths of a second quicker than the GT with a time of 5.3 seconds.
The hardcore Trofeo version of the Grecale drops the mild-hybrid powertrain in favour of the 3.0-litre twin turbocharged 'Nettuno' V6 first seen on the Maserati MC20 sports car. In the Grecale Trofeo, the engine produces 523bhp and 620Nm of torque which allows the SUV to sprint from 0-100km/h in just 3.8 seconds and onwards to a top speed of 285km/h.
The Maserati Grecale is smaller than the carmaker's flagship Levante SUV. The Grecale is 4,846mm long, 2,163mm wide and 1,670mm tall. The wheelbase of the Grecale measures 2,901mm long.
The Grecale features ventilated disc brakes with four-pot brake callipers as standard with the higher spec models featuring performance disc brakes with six-piston callipers at the front and four-piston callipers at the rear.
Maserati Grecale Design & Features
The Maserati Grecale sports a familiar design when compared to the larger Levante. However, the Grecale does sport a few interesting details that set it apart from its larger sibling.
Up at the front, the Grecale sports the familiar large grille section with the Maserati Trident logo at the centre. The grille is flanked on either side by large air intakes and the SUV also sports a large air dam underneath the grille. The vertically arranged headlamp unit makes the Grecale stand out from the larger Levante which sports a horizontal stack.
At the rear, the boomerang-shaped taillights are said to be inspired by the ones found on the 1998 Maserati 3200 GT. The more performance-oriented Modena and Trofeo variants sport feature a 34mm wider rear track compared to the base GT model and therefore sport bespoke bumpers.
The insides of the Grecale is where Maserati has gone to town with the changes. The Grecale features a four display setup.
These screens include a large driver's information display, a 12.3-inch infotainment unit underneath which sits a smaller 8.8-inch touchscreen unit that offers additional controls. The fourth and final screen comes in the form of the clock mounted on the dashboard.
Maserati offers different trim levels for the Grecale depending on the variant chosen with top-spec Trofeo models featuring carbon fibre panels along with perforated leather upholstery.
Thoughts On The Maserati Grecale
The Maserati Grecale sees the Italian marque take on the Porsche Macan. With its German rival set to go electric next year, Maserati has also revealed that an electric Grecale Folgore (Italian for lightning) will be arriving in the next 12 months.
With its signature styling and powerful engine options, the Grecale promises to be a good challenger to the Macan when it arrives later this year in showrooms across the world. However, it is next year that we can really expect sparks to fly when the Grecale becomes the first Maserati model to offer an EV variant.
