Maruti Suzuki April 2022 Sales Report - Year-over-Year Sales Decline By Over 10%

Maruti Suzuki's Year-over-Year passenger vehicle sales dropped by 10.22 per cent when compared to the same month in 2021. In April 2021, Maruti Suzuki had sold a total of 1,35,879 units, which is 13,884 units more than its April 2022 numbers.

Maruti Suzuki's Month-over-Month sales also declined sharply in April 2022. Compared to last month (March 2022) when it sold 1,33,861 passenger vehicles in the Indian domestic market, Maruti's sales dropped by 11,866 units, a decline of 8.86 per cent.

Maruti's Mini & Compact segment sales declined sharply in April 2022 compared to the same period last month dropping to 76,321 units compared to 97,359 units in April 2021, dropping by 21,038 units (21.6 per cent decline).

The Mini segment (Alto and S-Presso) saw sales drop from 25,041 in April 2021 to 17,137 in the same month this year, a decline of 7,904 units (31.56 per cent drop).

The Compact segment (Celerio, Ignis, Swift, WagonR, Baleno, Dzire, Tour S) saw sales numbers drop from 72318 (April 2021) to 59,184 units in April 2022, a decline of 13,134 (18.16 per cent drop).

Sales of the Maruti's only Mid-size sedan, the Ciaz dropped to just 579 units in April 2022. In the same month last year, Maruti had sold 1,567 units of the Ciaz. This means that Y-o-Y sales of the Ciaz sedan dropped by 63.68 per cent or 998 units.

It was not all doom and gloom in the passenger vehicle segment though for Maruti as the carmaker's Utility Vehicles and Van divisions saw sales numbers increase by 8,142 units (an 18 per cent hike) with the carmaker selling 45,095 Ertigas, XL6s, Brezzas, S-Cross' & Eeco's in April 2022 compared to 36,953 units in the same period last year.

Also, Maruti's light commercial vehicles division had a rather good month nearly tripling its numbers. Sales of the Maruti Suzuki Super Carry light commercial vehicle increased from 1,272 in April 2021 to 4,266 units in April 2022. Year-over-year sales of the Super Carry increased by 335.37 per cent.

Maruti's exports to other OEMs (Toyota with the Glanza and Urban Cruiser) also showed an increase in Y-o-Y sales. In April 2022, Maruti shipped 5,987 units to Toyota compared to 5,303 units in the same month last year, an increase of 684 units (up by 11.42 per cent).

Despite the increase in commercial vehicle sales and exports to other OEMs, Maruti's domestic sales figures were still down 10,206 units compared to last year. Maruti sold a total of 1,32,248 units in India over the month of April 2022, a decline of 7.16 per cent compared to April 2021 when it had sold 1,42,454 units.

Maruti's exports, on the other hand, increased by 6.38 per cent Year-over-Year. In April 2022, Maruti exported 18,413 units compared to April 2021's exports of 17,237 units.

Thoughts On Maruti's Sales Numbers For April 2022

Maruti Suzuki's overall sales declined by over 10 per cent Y-o-Y. This may have been due to the increase in prices that the OEM introduced in the middle of the month and of course the fact that the country is still recovering from the pandemic. However, Maruti should take heart from the increasing sales of its Utility Vehicles which are the future of the Indian car market.
