South Korean carmaker Kia's flagship EV6 electric crossover earned a 5-star rating at the Australasian NCAP ratings. The Kia EV6 scored 34.48 points out of 38 for adult protection and 42.96 points out of 48 in terms of child safety.

The Kia EV6 for the Australasian market comes packed with a host of safety features. This includes multiple airbags - Dual frontal, side chest-protecting, side head-protecting (curtain) airbags and a central airbag that protects front seat occupants in side-impact crashes - as standard for all models sold in Australia and New Zealand.

The Kia EV6 is also packed with multiple driver aids like autonomous emergency braking (Car-to-Car, Vulnerable Road User and Junction Assist) as well as a lane support system with lane keep assist (LKA), lane departure warning (LDW) and emergency lane keeping (ELK), and an advanced speed assistance system (SAS) as standard fitment on all variants sold in the two countries split by the Tasman Sea.

The Kia EV6 was put through a series of tests by Australasian NCAP which included full frontal and frontal offset tests at 50km/h, Side-impact tests at 60 km/h, an oblique pole test at 32km/h, far side-impact tests and a 40km/h pedestrian safety test.

In the frontal offset test, the Kia EV6 scored 5.62 points out of 8 while the full-width frontal test was even better with the electric SUV earning 7.98 points out of 8 in the test.

Australasian NCAP notes on the frontal offset test for the Kia EV with adult passengers reveal that the passenger compartment remained stable. The Kia EV6 provided marginal protection for the driver's chest and lower legs. The electric SUV was deemed to provide adequate protection to the lower legs of the front passenger. Protection was rated as good for all other areas for both occupants at the front.

The results of the full-frontal test revealed that the EV6 from Kia provided adequate support for the chest of the rear passenger. Protection was deemed good for all critical body areas of the driver while good protection was also provided for all other critical body regions for both the driver and rear passenger.

The Kia EV6 scored a maximum of 6 points in both the side-impact and oblique pole tests with the electric car providing good protection to all critical areas of the body. The centre airbag provided good protection for the heads of the driver and front passenger in side impact tests.

Prevention of excursion (movement towards the other side of the vehicle) in the far side impact tests was deemed to be adequate in the vehicle-to-vehicle impact scenario, and marginal for the vehicle-to-pole scenario. The EV6 also scored maximum points for rescue and extrication purposes.

In terms of child safety, the Kia EV6 was deemed to provide good protection to all critical body parts of the 6 year and 10 year dummies in the frontal offset test. For the side impact tests, the EV6 was deemed to provide marginal protection to the head of the 10 year dummies. The Kia EV6 provided good other body parts of the 10 year dummy and all parts of the 6 year dummy. In restraint installation tests, the EV6 scored 11.81 out of 12 while in terms of on-board safety features for children, the EV6 was marked 8 out of 13 points.

The Kia EV6 scored a total of 35.08 out of a total of 54 points on offer for pedestrian safety while its driver aid and safety systems helped it score 14.17 points out of 16 in terms of safety assistance features.
