South Korean carmaker Kia has released its sales numbers for the month of April 2022. Kia sold a total of 19,019 units in the month of April 2022, an 18% increase when compared to the same month in 2021.

Kia claims that it grew by 18 per cent Year-over-Year when compared to sales in the same month in 2021. However, the carmaker actually declined in terms of sales numbers compared to its numbers from last month. In March 2022, Kia sold a total of 22,622 units, which means sales figures came down by 15.93 per cent in a Month-over-Month comparison.

Commenting on the South Koran carmaker's sales performance in the month of April 2022, Hardeep Singh Brar, VP and Head of Sales & Marketing, Kia India said, "Kia India has sold close to 20,000 units on an average, every month in 2022 and it has been a healthy year for us. The global automotive industry has been facing a tough phase battling supply chain woes since the Covid-19 pandemic started in 2020. We have been receiving overwhelming demand for our vehicles, and we are optimising our production consistently to keep the waiting period in check."

He further added, "At Kia India, we believe in evolving ourselves consistently, and hence we are bringing the most hi-tech Kia ever made for our discerning Indian customers. With EV6, we are entering India's EV space, which has shown great potential. Recently, we have also launched the refreshed Seltos and the Sonet, enhancing the safety features of the models along with multiple updates and additional features. I would like to assure our customers to offer them the best value proportion with our products and services in India."

The total of 19,019 vehicles sold by Kia in April 2022 allowed it to capture 6.5 per cent of the Indian car market. Kia claims that this is up by 0.9 per cent compared to the same month last year when it had control of 5.6 per cent of the Indian car market.

April was another milestone making moment for Kia in India with the South Korean carmaker passing the 2 lakh sales milestone for its 'connected car' lineup in India.

Kia's flagship SUV, the Seltos was refreshed last month and continued to be the biggest contributor to its sales numbers. Kia sold a total of 7,506 units of the Seltos in April 2022.

The newly launched Carens MPV, which only arrived back in February, was the second best seller for Kia in India. The Carens accounted for 5,754 units in Kia's sales total for April.

Following closely behind in third place was the recently updated Sonet SUV. 5,404 units of Kia's compact sub-4-metre Sonet SUV left showrooms across the country in April.

The South Korean flagship model for India, the Carnival MPV recorded the smallest sales numbers for Kia in April 2022. The Kia Carnival reached the homes of 355 new owners in the month of April.

Another watershed moment for Kia also arrived late in April, when the carmaker announced that it would be bringing the EV6 electric vehicle to India.

The Kia EV6 will arrive in India on the 26th of May and will be restricted to just 100 units this year. The Kia EV6 will be the carmaker's first EV offering in India and will be imported in completely built unit (CBU) guise. Expect the Kia EV6 to cost upwards of Rs 50 lakhs (ex-showroom) when it arrives in India later this month.

Thoughts On Kia's Sales Performance In April 2022

Kia continues to push its way into the Indian market and its April sales numbers prove that the company is putting behind the problems of the pandemic that plagued it last year. However, sales have come down compared to last month, though this seems to be something that is being observed across the Indian car industry this month, mostly due to a hike in prices and the start of a new financial year.
