Electric Car Sales, August 2022 - Tata Dominates
The electric passenger car segment in India is displaying tremendous growth and many automobile manufacturers are launching new products to capitalise on the growing EV segment in the country. Here are the sales figures for electric passenger vehicles in August 2022.
Tata Motors (2,747 units)
Tata Motors has been dominating the electric passenger car segment for quite some time and the month of August 2022 is no different as the automaker manages to sell 2,747 units of Tata Nexon EV and Tata Tigor EV.
This has resulted in a YoY sales growth of more than 377 per cent as the company managed to sell just 575 units of electric passenger cars last year during the same time. However, MoM sales figures are down by 131 units, resulting in an almost 5 per cent decline.

MG Motors (311 units)
The MG ZS EV is the MG's only electric passenger vehicle in India, and the model is doing well considering the market size. In August 2022, MG Motors sold 311 units of MG ZS EV electric SUVs in India.
This performance accounts for a YoY sales decline of almost 18 per cent. However, MG seems to be a positive path as the MoM sales figures are up by more than 18 per cent as the automaker manages to sell 18 more vehicles in August 2022 compared to 263 units sold in July 2022.

Hyundai (69 units)
The Hyundai Kona EV is a decent electric SUV that will appeal to a wide range of buyers. Moreover, YoY sales figures have jumped by 475 per cent as the automaker managed to sell 69 units of Hyundai Kona EV in August 2022.
In comparison, Hyundai sold 58 units of Hyundai Kon EV electric SUVs in July 2022, resulting in a MoM sales increase of almost 19 per cent.
BYD (44 units)
BYD recently entered the electric passenger vehicle segment with the BYD e6 electric MUV. The automaker managed to sell 44 units in August 2022. Moreover, the company sold an identical number of BYD e6 electric MUVs in June 2022.
BMW (25 units)
BMW dominates the premium electric passenger vehicle category in India as the German automaker managed to sell 25 units of BMW iX and BMW i4 electric vehicles in August 2022.
Moreover, the company also witnessed a MoM sales increase of 400 per cent as the company sold just 5 units of electric vehicles in June 2022.
Mahindra (17 units)
Mahindra eVerito is a very common electric car among fleet car operators and the automaker sold 17 units of eVerito EV in August 2022. This has resulted in a YoY sales growth of more than 6 per cent.
However, MoM sales figures are down by more than 34 per cent as the company managed to sell just 26 units of Mahindra eVerito electric sedan in July 2022.
Audi (13 units)
Though the Audi eTron is a very capable electric car, the German automaker managed to sell just 13 units of eTron EVs in August 2022, resulting in a 30 per cent increase in YoY sales figures.
Moreover, MoM sales figures also increased by 85 per cent as the company managed to sell just 7 units in July 2022.
Porsche (7 units)
Porsche sold 7 units of its Taycan electric car in August 2022. Moreover, the company sold a similar number of Porsche Taycan electric cars in July 2022 as well.
Mercedes-Benz (4 units)
The German luxury car manufacturer Mercedes-Benz could only manage to sell 4 units of Mercedes-Benz EQC electric SUV in August 2022, resulting in a 100 per cent increase in YoY sales.
In addition to that, the German automaker managed to sell just 2 units of EQC electric SUVs in July 2022.
Thoughts About Electric Passenger Car Sales In India
Though the electric passenger car sales are showing tremendous growth, it is not up to the same level as the growth witnessed in the electric two-wheeler segment. However, we expect the segment to grow as the EV infrastructure improves in the country.
