Compact SUV Sales Breakup For August 2022 - Creta, Seltos, Kushaq, Astor, Taigun & More
The compact SUV segment has become very popular among Indian car buyers and the South Koreans continue to dominate the segment despite the arrival of newer models in the country. However, the sales of compact SUVs such as Kushaq, Astor and Taigun continue to be consistent.
Though the Renault Duster SUV can be credited for popularising the compact SUV segment in India, the Hyundai Creta soon became the dominant player with its long equipment list and punchy yet frugal powertrain options.
Hyundai Creta (12,577 units)
The Hyundai Creta is one of the most consistent selling SUVs in the Indian automobile market and continues to be an irreplaceable asset to Hyundai Motors in the country.
In August 2022, Hyundai sold 12,577 units of Creta SUV in India and the YoY sales of the SUV has dipped by 0.16 per cent as the South Korean automaker managed to sell 20 units more in the previous year. Moreover, MoM sales also dropped by 0.38 per cent as the company sold 48 more units in the previous month.

2 | Kia Seltos | 8,652 | 8,619 | 0.38 |

7 | Maruti S-Cross | 0 | 2,522 | -100.00 |
8 | Renault Duster | 0 | 153 | -100.00 |
Kia Seltos (8,415 units)
The Kia Seltos SUV single-handedly laid the foundation for Kia Motors in India. The long list of features and attractive pricing made the Kia Seltos SUV an instant hit in the Indian automobile market.
Apart from that, Kia Seltos continues to be a popular choice among compact SUV buyers and YoY sales have improved marginally as the South Korean automaker managed to sell just 8,652 units in August 2022. Moreover, MoM sales also improved by 1.30 per cent as the company managed to sell just 8,541 units in July 2022.
Rank | Compact SUV | Aug-22 | Jul-22 | Growth (%) MoM |
1 | Hyundai Creta | 12,577 | 12,625 | -0.38 |
2 | Kia Seltos | 8,652 | 8,541 | 1.30 |
3 | Skoda Kushaq | 1,876 | 2,064 | -9.11 |
4 | MG Astor | 1,324 | 1,362 | -2.79 |
5 | Volkswagen Taigun | 1,019 | 1,408 | -27.63 |

7 | Maruti S-Cross | 0 | 0 | - |
8 | Renault Duster | 0 | 0 | - |
Skoda Kushaq (1,876 units)
The launch of the Skoda Kushaq SUV has been a game-changer for the Czech automaker in India as the model single-handedly improved Skoda's sales figures in the country.
Though Skoda Kushaq is yet to challenge the sales figures of Hyundai Creta and Kia Seltos, the sales figures do show that the Czech automaker has successfully taken a sizable chunk of the SUV market by selling 1,876 units in August 2022. However, MoM sales figures are down by more than 9 per cent as the company managed to sell 2,064 units in July 2022.
MG Astor (1,324 units)
Though the demand for the MG Astor SUV has exceeded the automaker's expectations initially. However, the recent semiconductor shortage has hampered its outright sales figures.
Moreover, the MoM sales figures for the MG Astor SUV is down by almost 3 per cent as the automaker managed to sell 1,362 units in July 2022.
Volkswagen Taigun (1,019 units)
Under the skin, the Volkswagen Taigun is almost identical to the Skoda Kushaq. Though the Taigun SUV helped Volkswagen gain lost traction in the Indian automotive market, the sales figures are not as strong as the Kushaq SUV.
Despite being a relatively new SUV in the market, the Volkswagen Taigun sales figures stood at 1,019 units in August 2022, resulting in more than 27 per cent drop in MoM sales.
Nissan Kicks (89 units)
Japanese automaker Nissan launched the Kicks SUV with a lot of expectations. Moreover, the model could have been a worthy rival to the Hyundai Creta. However, the lack of focus and poor strategies stopped the SUV from reaching its full potential.
Thanks to a series of mistakes by the manufacturer, Nissan could only manage to sell 89 units of Kicks SUV in August 2022 with a YoY sales decline of more than 51 per cent. However, MoM sales figures improved by almost 6 per cent.
Maruti Suzuki S-Cross (0 units)
The Maruti Suzuki S-Cross has been discontinued by the automaker. However, the company sold 2,522 units in August 2021, which is decent for a model of this segment.
Renault Duster (0 units)
The Renault Duster is a comfortable and rugged SUV that used to generate a good chunk of sales for the French automaker. However, the lack of updates and inconsistent strategies led to poor sales performance.
Though the model has been discontinued from the Indian automobile market, last year around the same time, the company had sold just 153 units of Duster SUVs in India.
Thoughts About Compact SUVs In India
The total compact SUV sales stand at 25,537 units in August 2022. Moreover, it is clear that the South Korean automakers still have a clear upper hand in this segment and we expect this dominance to continue for a few years as well.
