BMW XM Hybrid SUV Revealed With 644bhp On Tap - First Bespoke M Car Since M1 Supercar
German carmaker BMW has revealed the XM SUV, the first bespoke model from the carmaker's M division since the M1 supercar. The BMW XM uses a hybrid powertrain with 644bhp on tap.
German carmaker BMW has revealed the XM SUV, the first bespoke model from the carmaker's M division since the M1 supercar. The BMW XM uses a plug-in-hybrid powertrain with a V8 engine and a single electric motor.
BMW XM Specs & Dimensions
The BMW XM's hybrid setup uses a version of the firm's 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 engine which produces 482bhp between 5,400 and 7,200rpm and 650Nm of peak torque between 1,600 and 5,000rpm. The XM's V8 engine is aided by a single electric motor that produces 194bhp and 280Nm of peak torque.
The combined output of 644bhp and 800Nm of peak torque is sent to all four wheels via an 8-speed automatic gearbox. The combined output of the BMW XM sprints from 0-100km/h in just 4.3 seconds and the hybrid SUV tops out at 250km/h.
The BMW XM sports multiple driving modes. The default hybrid mode uses both the engine and motor in tandem. In comfort mode, the XM prioritizes the electric motor and will even use the V8 engine as a generator if the battery power levels are low. Sport and Sport+ wring the maximum output out of the hybrid setup while ensuring the rest of the world hears the soundtrack of the twin-turbo V8.
The BMW XM's electric motor draws power from a 29.5kWh lithium-ion battery pack. In electric mode alone, the BMW XM can travel 88 kilometres on a single charge and hit a top speed of 140km/h. The battery pack of the BMW XM takes 4.25 hours to fully charge up when plugged into a 7.4kW power socket.
The new 644bhp XM will not be the most powerful SUV to bear that badge. BMW's M division is preparing a more powerful version of the XM hybrid SUV dubbed Label Red which will have 748bhp on tap when it arrives in 2023.
The new BMW XM is 5,110mm long, 2,005mm wide and 1,755mm tall. The hybrid SUV has a 3,105mm long wheelbase and sports a 69-litre fuel tank. The BMW XM weighs in at 2,785kg (unladen).
BMW XM Design & Features
The BMW XM retains the styling features first seen on the concept vehicle that bore the same name. The BMW XM SUV sports a rather large set of kidney grilles that look more like a set of huge nostrils. The large grilles are flanked on either side by split headlights, a design feature we first saw on the latest iterations of the X7 and 7 Series.
The hybrid BMW XM SUV rides on 21-inch alloy wheels as standard but owners can opt for 22 and even 23-inch units. The charging port is situated on the front wing to charge up the hybrid
The rear section of the XM is not as brash as the one on the concept but does feature some rather nice design touches like the sleek LED taillights, BMW badges on the upper edges of the rear windscreen (a homage to the M1), and twin hexagonal tailpipes stacked vertically on top of each other on either side of the diffuser element.
The interiors of the BMW XM are rather plush with the twin 14.5-inch curved displays dominating the dashboard. There is also a head up display, leather wrapped steering wheel and seats, and 'M' specific pedals.
The BMW XM has a 527-litre boot which can be expanded to 1,820 litres by folding down the rear seats.
Thoughts About The BMW XM
The BMW XM is the first bespoke offering from the Bavarian carmaker's M division since the crazy M1 supercar. While the SUV shape will make many a BMW purist shake their heads in disgust, the bonkers power output will hopefully be enough to bring the rest of the world into the cabin of XM.
