The 2022 BMW X1 will intially be offered with a range of 2 petrol and 2 diesel engine options along with a single version of the all-electric iX1. These will be followed by a pair of plug-in hybrid models in the future.

The petrol range starts with the 1.5-litre turbocharged three-cylinder engine in the sDrive 18i which puts out 134bhp and 230Nm of peak torque.

The higher-spec xDrive 23i version of the new BMW X1 sports a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine that pushes out 201bhp and 320Nm of peak torque. The mild hybrid setup on the X1 xDrive 23i adds another 18.7bhp and 55Nm of peak torque allowing the small SUV to sprint from 0-100km/h in 7.1 seconds.

The diesel range is powered by a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine that is offered in differed states of tune. In the sDrive 18d, the engine pushes out 147.5bhp and 360Nm of peak torque. The xDrive 23d version sees a jump to 194.4bhp and 400Nm of peak torque.

The xDrive 23d version of the X1 is aided by a 48V mild-hybrid system that adds 18.7bhp and 55Nm of torque to the mix allowing the SUV to complete the sprint from 0-100km/h in 7.4 seconds.

The all-electric iX1 is offered in just one configuration - xDrive 30 - a dual-motor all-wheel drive setup with a peak output of 308bhp and 494Nm of peak torque. The BMW iX1 can sprint from 0-100km/h in 5.7 seconds and the electric SUV can achieve a top speed of 183km/h.

The BMW iX1 draws power from a 64.7kWh battery pack that allows for a range of 438 kilometres on the WLTP cycle. The battery pack supports 11kW AC charging as standard which allows a full recharge in 6.5 hours. The optional upgrade to 22kW three-phase AC charging cuts down the charging time to just 3 hours and 45 minutes.

The BMW iX1 also supports fast DC charging at speeds of up to 135kW which allows the electric SUV to charge its batteries from 10 to 80 per cent in just 29 minutes. When connected to a fast DC charger, the BMW iX1 can recuperate 121 kilometres of range in just 10 minutes.

The new BMW X1 is 4,500mm long, 1,845mm wide and 1,642mm tall. The 2022 BMW X1's wheelbase is 2,692mm long and the ground clearance of the SUV is 205mm.

2022 BMW X1 & iX1 - Design & Features

In terms of design, the new X1's is an evolution of the second-gen model. The front end features slim LED headlights with DRLs flanking the iconic BMW kidney grille. The side profile has been stretched to account for the extra length and the SUV features chunky wheelarches and the door handles now sit flush with the bodywork. Also new is the extended roof spoiler at the rear.

The iX1 model sports a few aero tweaks to smooth out the airflow around it and also features bright blue highlights to help distinguish it from its ICE siblings.

Step inside the thrid-gen BMW X1 lineup and the changes are more evident. BMW's curved display dual-screen layout has made its way into the carmaker's smallest SUV. The setup includes a 10.7-inch driver's display and a 10.25-inch infotainment screen running BMW's latest OS 8 software.

The rear seats can be moved forwards and backwards allowing for a maximum boot space of 540 litres for the ICE models and 490 litres for the iX1.

Thoughts On The BMW X1 and iX1

The third-gen BMW X1 sports an evolutionary design but has offers a multitude of powertrain options including the all-new, all-electric iX1 which is expected to replace the venerated i3 in the carmaker's lineup. Overall the changes are significant enough to make the new X1 something to look out for when it comes to India.
