The new BMW M4 CSL sees BMW bring back the CSL badging for the first time since the 2004 BMW M3 CSL. The CSL in the badge stands for Coupe Sport Leichtbau which is German for Coupe Sport Lightweight. The new BMW M4 CSL ears that title though as it is 100 kilogrammes lighter than the regular M4 coupe.

BMW M4 CSL - What's Under The Bonnet?

The BMW M4 CSL is powered by the same S58B30T0 engine found on the regular M4. However, for the M4 CSL, BMW M have fiddled around with the engine ECU and increased the boost pressure from 1.7 bar to 2.1 bar. BMW M have also fitted the exhaust system with a titanium silencer which not only cuts weight down but also gives the new M4 CSL a better vocal identity.

All these changes mean that the BMW M4 CSL's 3.0-litre twin-turbo straight six engine now produces 542bhp and 6,250rpm which is 39bhp more than that on the standard M4. Peak torque remains the same at 650Nm but is now available from 2,750 to 5,950rpm.

The M4 CSL's engine sends power to the rear wheels via an 8-speed torque convertor automatic with launch control. The BMW M4 CSL sprints from 0-100km/h in just 3.7 seconds. 0-200km/h takes just 10.7 seconds and the top speed is 307km/h. The new BMW M4 CSL is also the fastest BMW ever around the feared Nurburgring Nordschleife with a time of 7:15.667.

BMW M4 CSL - Earning The CSL Badge The Hard Way

BMW's M Division went to town on the rather porky M4 to create the new CSL. The extensive use of carbon fibre on the body panels including the new carbon bonnet and bootlid have shaved off 11 kilogrammes. The new sonorous titanium silencer has resulted in 4 kilos being cut and the carbon ceramic brakes have lopped off another 14 kilogrammes of unsprung weight from the M4 CSL compared to the M4.

Other weight saving tricks include new sports seats which reduces the weight by 24 kilos and the deletion of the rear seats which helps the diet by chopping off another 21 kilogrammes.

More weight saving changes include unique forged alloy wheels (19 inches at the front and 20 inches at the rear) along with new springs and dampers and less insulation and a few other bits and bobs help bring the weight savings to 100 kilogrammes in the M4 CSL.

BMW M4 CSL Design Tweaks

The all-new BMW M4 CSL brings with a few design tweaks to help the car stand out from the regular M4. These changes include a new carbon-fibre bonnet with exposed stripes that show off the weave of the lightweight material. The new M4 CSL also features a revised grille with fewer slats, a new splitter and new yellow laser headlamps.

The new forged alloy wheels are exclusive to the new M4 CSL and look rather cool. The M4 CSL also features a new carbon fibre boot lid with a ducktail spoiler and some rather snazzy laser taillights. Also, the BMW badges look quite similar to the ones seen on the Motorsport division cars from the 1970s.

Thoughts On the BMW M4 CSL

The all-new BMW M4 CSL sees the Bavarian carmaker bring back the CSL badge after nearly 3 decades. With just 1000 set to be made, the new M4 CSL is going to be yet another incredibly lusted after BMW with a CSL badge on its arse.
