German carmaker BMW has revealed the 3.0 CSL. The BMW 3.0 CSL celebrates the 50th birthday of BMW's M Division and is probably the rarest new car to come from the Bavarian brand.

The new 3.0 CSL was last used in 1972 for a homologation special which earned the nickname the Batmobile. Unlike the 1972 model (of which 1,265 units were made), the new BMW 3.0 CSL is not a homologation special but instead is a 50-unit limited-run two-seater that celebrates the 50th birthday of BMW M.

The all-new BMW 3.0 CSL is powered by a 3.0-litre twin-turbocharged straight-six engine. The engine produces 552bhp and 550Nm of peak torque, which makes the new 3.0 CSL, the most powerful six-cylinder car from BMW to date.

To keep the BMW fanboys happy, BMW has gone back to its roots with the new 3.0 CSL sporting a 6-speed manual gearbox that sends power to the rear wheels with the help of an active rear differential.

BMW hasn't released any performance figures for the new CSL model except for the power-to-weight figure of 2.9 kg/PS which means the new 3.0 CSL weighs in at 1,624 kilogrammes.

To deal with the twists and the turns and everything bumpy, the BMW 3.0CSL sports a double-joint spring strut front axle and a five-link rear axle in M-specific design and adaptive M suspension with electronically controlled shock absorbers.

Braking duties on the new BMW 3.0 CSL are taken care of by massive 400mm carbon ceramic discs with six-piston fixed callipers and 380mm discs at the rear clamped down by a single-piston fixed-calliper setup.

The BMW 3.0 CSL rides on lightweight, centre-lock wheels - 20 inches at the front and 21 at the rear - that are shod with Michelin tyres developed specifically for the limited-run model. These tyres feature the number 50 embossed on the sidewalls.

The design of the new BMW 3.0 CSL reminds you of the 3.0 CSL homage concept from a few years back and the original 1972 model.

The front end sports smaller than usual kidney grilles while the LED headlights have a very distinct yellow tinge to them. The new 3.0 CSL sports circular intakes on the front bumper mimic the one found on the 1970s homologation special.

There are BMW badges everywhere including the section after the iconic Hofmeister kink of the rear window. The sides of the car sport massively flared wheelarches that play host to the forged light alloy wheels painted gold.

The roof-mounted wing is a direct throwback to the 1972 3.0 CSL and the concept car from a few years back while the massive wing at the rear really does remind you of the homologation special that earned the nickname of the Batmobile. The new 3.0 CSL also sports the iconic quad exhaust setup and some rather fancy bespoke LED taillights.

The interior ditches the rear seats to cut weight and the 6-speed manual gearbox sports a white topped shifter with the number 50 on it just like the ones seen on the doors.

The seats are carbon-fibre buckets with black Alcantara upholstery and 3.0 CSL badging. Each car will sport its production number on a plaque fitted to the dash.

Thoughts About The BMW 3.0 CSL

The BMW 3.0 CSL is the ultimate birthday from BMW's M division to itself and with just 50 available it is perhaps the ultimate driving toy for BMW fanboys around the world.
