Bharat NCAP Draft Notification Approved By MoRTH: Everything You Need To Know
The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has approved the draft notification for Bharat-NCAP. This will allow the OEMs to test their vehicles in the country's own in-house test facilities - inching a step closer to becoming Aatmanirbharbharat.
New Car Assessment Program, otherwise known as NCAP aims to improve the safety of automobiles. USA laid the foundation stone for what NCAP is today with a programme to let its consumers know about the crashworthiness of a new car in the US market.
This programme eventually evolved and became New Car Assessment Program (NCAP). At present, there are a total of 9 different New Car Assessment Programs (NCAP) globally. This includes US NCAP, Euro NCAP, Japan NCAP, ASEAN NCAP, China NCAP, Korean NCAP, Latin NCAP, and Global NCAP.
In India, more than a few new cars have voluntarily undergone crash testing at the Global-NCAP and Tata Nexon became the first Indian vehicle to score a perfect 5-Star rating at the Global-NCAP.
Now, there are five Indian vehicles that have scored a perfect 5-Star rating at the Global-NCAP - Tata Punch, Mahindra XUV300, Tata Altroz, Tata Nexon, and Mahindra XUV700.
Speaking about crash testing, the new Indian cars' crashworthiness is tested by Global-NCAP and we are yet to have an in-house crash testing facility such as China NCAP, US NCAP, and Korean NCAP.
With the introduction of Bharat NCAP, India will have its own in-house crashworthiness testing facility. While many of you may feel like a redundant crash testing programme, the upcoming Bharat NCAP will factor in Indian regulations as well.
This will not only push Indian car manufacturers to push the envelope of safety standards, but it will also improve consumer awareness regarding the importance of safety standards in cars.
"Star rating of Indian cars based on crash tests is extremely crucial not just for the safety of passengers, but also increase the export-worthiness of Indian automobiles," said the Union Road Transport and Highways Minister, Mr Nitin Gadkari.
In addition to that, he also added "Bharat NCAP will prove to be a critical instrument in making our automobile industry Aatmanirbhar (self-sufficient), with the mission of making India the number 1 automobile hub in the world,"
The main focus of the Bharat NCAP will include structural integrity as a stable shell would greatly absorb the energy due to the impact. Moreover, the pattern of the impact absorption is expected to be as per new protocols.
In 2020, Indian recorded a total of more than 3.54 lakh road accidents and more than 1.33 lakh people have died and more than 3.35 lakh people were injured as a result. The government tries to reduce these numbers by introducing the Bharat NCAP.
Thoughts About Bharat NCAP
The introduction of Bharat NCAP will promote healthy competition among Indian automakers to build safer cars for Indian roads and it will also promote awareness among the consumers regarding the importance of a safer car. Moreover, India will be inching a step closer to becoming Aatmanirbharbharat.
